BOSTON, Mass. – Points have only been awarded in six events thus far in the 2014 ECAC Championships, but the Bucknell women's track and field team is off to an exceptional start at the Boston University Track and Field Pavilion. The Bison, who finished third to Boston University and Lehigh at this year's Patriot League Championships, set or tied three school records and advanced competitors to finals in four events on their first day of competition, turning in many performances that were significantly better than those that they put forth at the conference meet.
“It was a great first day and also a silver lining after a tough league meet,” said head coach Kevin Donner. “We set three school records, and have finalists competing in four events tomorrow, so that will put us on the scoreboard. I'm also very excited to see Sophia in the shot put.”
One of the highlights of Saturday's racing was the trio of school records turned in by the Bison. Senior Jennifer Zymet, who is the second seed heading into Sunday's final, set the program mark in the 500m with a time of 1:12.92 that crushed the previous record of 1:14.25, set by Megan Hathaway in 2009. Junior Kim Nagotko also raced to a school record time, tying her own mark in the 200 with a time of 24.65, and the third record of the day came in the 4x400, where the squad of sophomore Jess Bridle, Nagatko, sophomore Jenn Silvestri and Zymet turned in a blazing fast time of 3:44.11. The quartet, which advances to Sunday's final as the fourth seed, broke the mark of 3:46.28 set by Zymet, Bridle, Sash Hornock and Nagotko in 2013.
Senior Hana Casalnova advanced to finals on Sunday in the 800, finishing ninth with a personal best time of 2:10.69, a mark that makes her the third-fastest performer in the event in program history. The 4x800 team of freshman Seline Tan Torres, junior Kylie Pearse, freshman Sarah Chandler and junior Morgan Roche also cruised into the event finals, turning in the sixth-fastest performance ever by a Bison squad. Their time of 9:00.87 makes them the seventh seed on Sunday.
The 2014 ECAC Championships will conclude on Sunday, with competition set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
