LEWISBURG, Pa.- Prizila Negrete received another award in her illustrious career representing the Five Stars of Honduras when she was named the nation's 2025 Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Year this past weekend at the Cermonia de Premiacion al Deportista Hondureño Del Año: Atletas 5 Estrellas for her accomplishments at last year's competitions, which include a Honduras national record.Â
"Getting to receive this award in front of my parents, my family that lives in Honduras, and my friends is a dream come true," said Negrete. "It was an honor to be at an event with the best athletes representing their respective sport. Being surrounded by so many incredible athletes reminded me how much heart, passion, and pride goes into this journey. We carry our country with us, our flag, our story, and our people. To represent Honduras and make our name known, to show the world where we come from and what we're capable of, makes this honor even greater."
In August 2025, Suazo Negrete represented Honduras at the Central American Championships. She posted three top-five finishes, including a victory in the shot put. The gold medal throw of 13.10m (42-11.75) came in her sixth and final attempt - a clutch and thrilling moment for the participant and her nation. Suzao Negrete minted silver in the discus throw, tossing 40.93m (134-3). She rounded out the competition, placing fifth in the hammer throw at 42.03m (137-10). At the time, she was 19-years-old, rendering her finishes even more impressive against the vastly older competition.Â
She followed up her shining summer with an amazing autumn. At the Central American Games in October, Suazo Negrete set the meet and Honduras national record in the shot put, throwing 13.74m (45-1). Her mark broke the meet record set in 2001 and the Honduras record established in 2021. She had recently turned 20-years-old but that age was no hurdle in her defeats over her older foes. Suazo Negrete also finished fourth in the hammer throw, tossing 48.61m (159-5).
"Congratulations to Prizila on being named Athlete of the Year in Honduras," said Bucknell throws coach Ryan Protzman. "She has captured many records and accolades while representing her country, but has done so much outside of competition. She works so hard to create opportunities and makes sure the up-and-coming athletes in Honduras have great support."
Suazo Negrete competes for Honduras via her mother's and maternal grandparents' heritage and has earned six medals while representing the Five Stars. Currently injured, she plans on competing again this summer, if healthy, at several competitions.
"This achievement is not mine alone, it's my parents, my brother's, my family, my friends, and my colleagues," said Suazo Negrete in an Instagram. "Thank you for holding me, for believing in me, and for being a part of this journey. I am currently in the process of recovering from an injury, working step-by-step towards returning to my best level. It's also part of God's plan and it doesn't end there. I'm gonna come back, put on the uniform, and put my flag high up."
