LEWISBURG, Pa. – The awards keep coming for the Bucknell women's basketball team, and on Wednesday, senior Shelby Romine (Centreville, Va./Westfield) was named to the five-member Academic All-Patriot League team. Romine was joined by American's Alexis Dobbs, the Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as well as Boston University's Rashidat Agboola, Holy Cross' Alexis Smith and Lafayette's Emily Homan on the squad, and becomes the fourth consecutive Bison to earn this academic and athletic honor.
Romine, who earned a first team All-Patriot League selection on Tuesday and was the first Bison to do so since 2009, is a double major in philosophy and economics, and has maintained a 3.65 cumulative GPA over the course of her four-year academic career. A six-time selection to Bucknell's Dean's List, she has earned a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in each of the past three years, and is just the second three-time captain in program history.
In addition to this year's first team All-Patriot League honor, Romine was voted to the second team in 2013 and the All-Rookie squad in 2011. She has led the team in scoring for each of the past three seasons, and currently ranks second on the squad and fifth in the league with a career-high 15.3 points per game. She became the fifth player in Bucknell women's basketball history to score 1,500 career points with her performance at Lehigh on Feb. 26, and also the fifth player to string together three 300+ point seasons during her career.
Romine, who has recorded 300 point-100 assists stat lines in each of her last three campaigns, is the only player in program history to tally over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists in her four years, and currently ranks fifth all-time at Bucknell with 1,518 points, as well as second in career three-point field goals made (175) and third in career assists (429). She has recorded 23 double-digit scoring games this season, including six 20+ point performances, as well as seven double-doubles, and was named Patriot League Player of the Week on Feb. 24. Romine, whose heroic layup at the buzzer lifted Bucknell to a one-point win over Army in January, is currently ranked among the Patriot League's best in scoring (5th, 15.3 ppg), rebounding (12th, 6.3 rpg), assists (7th, 4.3 apg), free throw percentage (7th, .768), three-point field goal percentage (4th, .417), three-point field goals made (10th, 1.7), defensive rebounds (3rd, 5.7 rpg) and minutes played (5th, 34.4).
Since the Academic All-Patriot League team was introduced in 2011, Bucknell has had one women's basketball student-athlete recognized each year. Joyce Novacek was selected to the inaugural squad, Rachel Voss was honored in 2012 and Lindsay Horbatuck was voted to the team in 2013.
The Academic All-Patriot League Team honors student-athletes who excel in their sport and the classroom, and the size equals the sport's first-team All-Patriot League composition. Sports information directors, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes, select the academic award winners.
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
The Bison, who have a 16-12 overall record and concluded the regular season with an 11-7 mark in Patriot League play, are set to host the first-ever women's basketball playoff game in Sojka Pavilion on Thursday, March 6. Fourth-seeded Bucknell will welcome fifth-seeded Holy Cross, a team that has played to an 18-11 overall record and a 10-8 Patriot League mark, with two of those losses coming at the hands of the Bison. Tip-off for the quarterfinal game is scheduled for 7 p.m., and tickets may be purchased in person at the Campus Box Office, over the phone at 570-577-1000 or online. The contest will also be video streamed by Bison Vision and available free of charge on the Patriot League Network.
