Track and Field Set to Host Patriot League Championships at Gerhard Fieldhouse
2/20/2014 5:29:00 PM | Women's Track and Field
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell track and field team will welcome the nine other schools in the newly-expanded Patriot League to Gerhard Fieldhouse on Friday for the start of competition in the 2014 Patriot League Track & Field Championships. The Bison have prepared for this meet for weeks, improving their performances with each successive weekend of competition, and are primed for a sweep of the team titles, a feat that they accomplished when they last hosted the conference show-down in 2012.
Competition will begin on Friday at 12 p.m. with the women's pentathlon and the first four events in the men's heptathlon, and will pick up again at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with the conclusion of the heptathlon, as well as finals in the weight throw, long jump, high jump, 5,000 and 4x800 relay. Sunday's 14 events commence at 10 a.m., and the team champions will be crowned in an awards ceremony at 5 p.m. Live results will be available for the duration of the competition.
The Bucknell women enter the weekend as the defending Patriot League champions, having won the meet for the past two seasons, and were also picked to finish first in the pre-season poll conducted back in December. The Bison have won more team titles than any other school in the conference, taking top honors on 15 occasions and winning seven consecutive championships from 2002 to 2010. Bucknell, which has never finished less than third in a league meet, returns 13 scorers and two individual champions from last year's winning squad, and is primed to defend the title on its home track.
The Bucknell men, who won the team's first title since 1993 in the 2012 meet, were edged out by Navy last year, and will be looking to reclaim the Patriot League title with their performances this weekend. The Bison, who have finished in the top three in the conference on 21 occasions, were picked to finish second in the pre-season poll, but have produced a plethora of record-setting performances since December, setting them up for a strong run at the title. They return 17 scorers, two individual champions and all four members of the winning distance medley relay team to this year's squad and will seek their fifth team championship when they take to the track on Friday.
