LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell kicks off the 2014-15 indoor track and field season when it hosts the Bison Opener on Friday and Saturday at Gerhard Fieldhouse. It will be the 12th straight year the Bison open the season with the event.
The 10-team event begins Friday night with the multi-event athletes. The men's heptathlon starts with the 60-meter dash at 5 p.m., while the women's pentathlon gets underway with the 60-meter hurdles at 5:15 p.m. Action picks back up on Saturday with the multi-events at 8 a.m., the field events at 9:30 a.m. and the running events at 11 a.m.
"Having a meet before the holiday break is very critical in my opinion since our sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, vaulters and throwers have been training all fall and are itching to compete,” Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner said. “Like most programs, we will take a holiday break later this month and our next competition is not until Jan. 10 at Penn State, so this weekend will give us a good gauge on where we are at as a team. Most of our distance runners are on a break from the recent cross country season, so they will not compete until January. The competition for the meet looks very good and we plan to have some people get their season's off to a great start. It is always interesting to see how the freshmen respond to their first collegiate experience."
Senior Christian Lupica had a memorable day at the Bison Opener last season, setting school records in the 300-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles. He won the 300-meter dash and was second in the hurdles event. Senior Kevin Tapper and junior Anthony Menza both ran legs on the second-place 4x400 meter relay team.
On the women's side, senior Allison Sharkey won her heat in the 300-meter dash and sophomore Carly Reiner was first in the triple jump. Junior Jenn Silvestri took third in the 300-meter dash.
Following this weekend's event, the Bison will have a month off before competing at the Penn State Relays on Jan. 10.
