Field Hockey into Patriot League Title Game after 2-0 Win over Colgate

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The top-seeded Bucknell field hockey team received goals from Liz Wills and Abby Watson in a dominant 2-0 victory over fourth-seeded Colgate in a Patriot League Tournament semifinal match on Friday at Graham Field. The Bison are now into the league championship game for the sixth time in program history and will face second-seeded Boston University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Now 13-5 on the season, Bucknell launched 11 shots in each half and outshot the Raiders (5-12) 22-3. Even though the field was tilted toward the Colgate goal for most of the day, an 11-save performance from Amanda DiDomizio kept the Raiders in the game.
Despite some good looks at the goal by Bucknell, the contest remained scoreless for more than half an hour until the Bison cashed in on one of their 10 penalty corners. Cassie Lawrence took a pass from stopper Kelsey Mucelli and then found Wills open on the right side. Wills blasted home a shot just inside the right post for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Bison goalie Shannon Keen was called upon for a couple of saves in the second half, and then Bucknell put the game away with the all-important insurance goal with 4:11 remaining. Watson tipped a shot in on goal. DiDomizio made the kick save, but the rebound came right back to Watson, and she slapped it back in for her third tally of the season.
"We were a bit frustrated not being able to score for most of the first half, but their goalie did a fantastic job," said Patriot League Coach of the Year Jeremy Cook afterward. "We told them just to stick with it and stay with the gameplan in the second half. They did an excellent job with that, and we were able to finish it out."
Wills and Watson took five shots apiece to lead all players, while Lawrence attempted four.
Bucknell will be playing in the Patriot League championship game for the first time since 2011, and the Bison will be trying to win this tournament for the first time.
Admission to the championship is free of charge, and there will be a free live webcast on the Patriot League Network.
