APALACHIN, N.Y. -- Senior Peter Scialabba carved up the Links at Hiawatha Landing on Sunday, firing a career-best, 5-under-par 67 to grab the individual lead after round one of the Binghamton Invitational. Scialabba's sensational round, which equals the eighth-best in program history, spurred Bucknell to a season-best 290 team score and a spot in fifth place in a field of 16 teams.
Not to be overlooked behind Scialabba's 67 was an even-par 72 from sophomore John Edler, which puts him in a tie for 13th place. Freshman Daniel Levin followed with a 74, and the Bison also counted a 77 from sophomore Zachary Melnick. Freshman Austin Honigford, playing as an individual, also carded a 77, and sophomore D.J. Magee shot 81.
Scialabba posted a round in the 60s for the second time in his career. He opened the 2012 Patriot League Championship with a 69 and went on to earn Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors. The 67 was Bucknell's lowest score since Will Bachman carded a 66 at the Colgate Invitational in the fall of 2010.
The school record is a 65 by Ben Pellicani at the 2005 Patriot League Championship, and there have been six 66s and now six 67s.
Scialabba was not the only player in the field to go low on Sunday. Delaware's Kieran Purcell and Kyle Martin both shot 68, and Hofstra's David Won and LIU's George Williams fired 69s. A dozen players in the field are under par and another 11, including Edler, are even.
Delaware (-9, 279), Robert Morris (-4, 284) and Binghamton (-2, 286) are all in red numbers in the team scores. Hofstra is fourth at 289 and Bucknell fifth at 290.
The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Monday, starting with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
