LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Chris Devlin won three races and posted two new program top-10 times to highlight the opening day of the 2014-15 campaign for the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team. The Bison hosted UMBC Sunday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium in an unscored meet to kick off the season. The two squads competed in 22 different events, including a few non-traditional events, such as the 100 IM, 50 fly, 50 back and 50 breast, in addition to the standard college races.
Devlin swept the 100 and 200 backstrokes, setting program top-10 times in the process. He won the 200 back by 6.17 seconds over his nearest competitor and his time of 1:49.08 ranks him fifth in the school's record book. Devlin followed that with a win in the 100 back in 50.96, the No. 9 time in program annals, .03 ahead of 10th-place Jim Harvey. Devlin also won the 200 free and was part of the second-place 200 medley relay.
Bucknell totaled nine victories during the meet with senior Ben Seketa (100 breast, 200 breast) and freshman Triston Loux (50 fly, 100 fly) joining Devlin as multiple winners. Sophomore Louis Behnen (400 IM) and freshman Colin Lynch (50 back) also earned wins. Behnen added a pair of runner-up finishes, while Lynch totaled three top-three showings.
A Bison finished first or second in every event with Bucknell sweeping the top two spots in the 50 fly.
“It was good to finally see the freshmen competing at this level and to see how our veterans are doing in their training,” noted ninth-year Bucknell head coach Dan Schinnerer. “Overall, it was a good day and I was pleased with how we performed this early in the season.”
Bucknell will next be in action Oct. 18 when it hosts Patriot League member Boston U. and George Washington in a double dual. Start time for that event is 1 p.m.
