TOWSON, Md. - Brigit Falcón scored in the 71st minute and Jessie Ashworth made five saves to help the Bucknell women's soccer team get back in the win column with a 1-0 edging of Towson on the road on Friday afternoon at the Tiger Soccer Complex. The Bison snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 3-4 on the season, while Towson (3-3-1) saw its three-game unbeaten streak come to an end.
Evelyn Nicinski set up the winning goal with a long run from midfield. She took a through ball, drew two defenders and slipped a pass back to a wide-open Falcón at the top of the 18. Falcón slotted the shot home for her first goal of the year and second of her career.
Ashworth and the Bison defense made the lead hold up. The sophomore keeper made four of her five saves in the final 19 minutes after Falcón's goal, the last of those coming on a Katie Ponce shot with 41 seconds remaining on the clock.
Bucknell's fullback unit has been depleted by injuries early this season, but in this one coach Ben Landis got 90 strong minutes each from the quartet of Courtney Nelson, Hannah Bonotto, Lauren Dandie and Montana Paley.
"We defended very well down the stretch," said Landis. "We only used four subs tonight but got quality minutes from Danielle Piccirilli, Alex Degarmo, Alexis Gannon and Brigit Falcón. Brigit has been playing very well and deserved a goal. The whole midfield did well. Towson played a very high line, which we had to adjust to, but I thought we were good on the counter."
Towson outshot Bucknell 5-2 and had all five corner kicks in the first half, but in the second Bucknell had the edge in shots (7-6) and corners (4-2). The Bison did a good job on Towson's Emily Banes, who came into the game ranked in the top 10 nationally in goals (6) and points (14). Banes was held to one shot in 83 minutes. Towson keeper Erin Quinn made five saves.
Bucknell will remain in the Baltimore area to face UMBC on Sunday at 1 p.m.
