BALTIMORE, Md. - Jessy Brown headed in a corner kick with just 5:06 left in regulation to send UMBC to a 1-0 victory over Bucknell in women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Retriever Soccer Park. Jessie Ashworth made six saves in goal for the Bison, who begin Patriot League play next Saturday at home against Army.
UMBC outshot Bucknell 13-8 for the game, but the Bison had some quality scoring chances. Chelsey Garkowski led the team with four shots, while Brigit Falcón, the goal-scorer in Friday's 1-0 win over Towson, had two. Lauren Kadet stopped all five Bucknell shots on goal, including a big two-save flurry in the second half.
After nearly 85 minutes of scoreless play, the Retrievers (4-2-2) struck on one of their eight corner kicks. Melissa Hummel sent in the corner from the right side, and Brown headed it toward the right post. A Bucknell defender stationed on that post tried to flick the ball out of the air but could not keep it out of the goal.
UMBC stretched its unbeaten streak to four straight games and snapped a five-game series losing streak against Bucknell.
The Bison will take a 3-5 record into the start of Patriot League play. First up is Army next Saturday at 2 p.m. at Emmitt Field.
