Bison Feature Promising First-Year Class

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- A cross country/track and field program with a championship pedigree like Bucknell's does not succeed without overcoming the loss of some outstanding graduating classes. Last spring the Bison swept the men's and women's Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championships -- it was the fourth straight title for the men and the 12th in the last 15 years for the women -- thanks in large part to a stellar senior class that featured an All-American and several school record-holders. But head coach Kevin Donner feels that his program has "reloaded" again in 2013-14, with a promising first-year class stepping in on both the men's and women's side.
"We have a very strong class coming in with a good balance of power spread across all of the events," said Donner. "There are some athletes that we expect to have an immediate impact, and there are others that will pay their dues for a year or two and help us win two to three years from now. We filled what some may consider weak areas, and we enhanced some strong areas. Overall, I am very pleased, however a recruiting class is not judged until two years down the road."
The new distance runners will debut on Aug. 31 at the annual Bison Open cross country meet, which starts and finishes at the West Fields adjacent to Holmes Stadium. Indoor track and field gets underway on Dec. 7 with the Bison Opener in Gerhard Fieldhouse, one of four straight home meets to start the season.
