LEWISBURG, Pa. - Caroline Tolli (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport), a standout on the Bucknell women's track and field and cross country teams the last four years, was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team, it was announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The first member of the Bison women's track and field program to earn Academic All-District honors three times, Tolli is Bucknell's 124th Academic All-American, fifth-most among all Division I schools.
Tolli is Bucknell's third Academic All-America selection this year, following men's soccer midfielder Joe Meyer and men's basketball superstar Mike Muscala. She is Bucknell's first Academic All-American from the women's track and field program since pole vaulter Melanie Buczko in 2007 and the first Bison honoree to compete in both women's cross country and track and field since Becki Marshall and Kelly McConnell in 2002.
In order to be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or better and be a starter or key reserve on his/her team.
Through the first seven semesters of her academic career, Tolli posted a perfect 4.0 GPA while majoring in education and Spanish as well as minoring in Latin America Studies. Tolli was twice voted the Patriot League Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was named to the Bucknell Dean's List in every term, is an eight-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and a seven-time Academic All-Patriot League honoree.
Athletically, Tolli broke multiple Bucknell records during the 2012-13 campaign. In the winter, she took over the program's No. 1 time in the mile (4:49.99) as well as the 1,000 meters (2:50.88), although her teammates' success bumped her to third in the 1,000 by the end of the season. During the outdoor campaign, Tolli broke the program standard in the 1,500 meters (4:25.55). By the end of the year, she also held top-10 times indoors in the 3,000 meters and distance medley relay, and outdoors in the 4x800 relay.
At the 2013 Patriot League Championships, Tolli won the mile indoors and the 4x800 outdoors, helping the Bison to team titles at both meets. Those two individual gold medals brought her career total to six.
A two-time First Team All-Patriot League selection in cross country, Tolli was Bucknell's top finisher at the league meet this past October, placing seventh overall.
In April, Tolli received the Alvin F. Jackson Jr. Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award, presented "for outstanding academic and athletic achievement and future promise as Bucknell alumni" at the 52nd annual Bucknell Athletics Senior Recognition Dinner. She also became the first Bison in more than a decade to win two awards at the end-of-year awards dinner, adding the Christy Mathewson Award, which is presented to the top senior athlete.
In addition to her tremendous individual success academically and athletically, Tolli graduated last month having been a part of seven team championships during her time as a Bison.
