Bucknell Women's Rowing Finishes Second at Patriot League Championship

WORCESTER, Mass. (Lake Quinsigamond) -The Bucknell women's rowing program saw its streak of Patriot League titles come to an end at seven on Friday morning as the Bison placed second to Navy at the Patriot League Championship. Bucknell's varsity four won its race, while the varsity eight posted a runner-up showing. The second varsity eight was third.
The team outcome was still in doubt entering the final race of the day, the varsity eight. The Bison were tied for second with Holy Cross, just three points behind Navy. If the Bison finished ahead of both the Mids and Crusaders they would have claimed the team title once again. However, Navy's varsity eight posted a 4.6-second victory over Bucknell.
The Bison and Mids are still the only two teams to win Patriot League titles. Navy claimed the crown in 2005, the first year rowing was a Patriot League-sponsored sport. Bucknell then began its streak of seven consecutive trophies in 2006.
New for the Patriot League champion this year is an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship, which will be held May 31-June 2 in Indianapolis, Ind.
Bucknell totaled 29 points in the team standings, equaling the second-most ever scored by a Patriot League runner-up. Navy had 35 points thanks to victories in the varsity eight and second varsity eight as well as a second-place showing in the varsity four. Holy Cross (23), MIT (20), Colgate (9) and Lehigh (8) rounded out the team standings.
Scoring for the events is done in a 6-5-4-3-2-1 order for the varsity four, 12-10-8-6-4-2 for the second varsity eight and 18-15-12-9-6-3 for the varsity eight.
Bucknell's varsity four won the opening race of the day rather handily, crossing the finish line nearly eight seconds ahead of Navy. It marked the fifth time the Bison have won the varsity four race at the Patriot League Championship, following victories in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2012. Bucknell boats have combined for 16 total wins in the nine years of the Patriot League Championship, including sweeps of all three races in 2007 and 2009.
