LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell women's track and field led the way with three selections to the Academic All-Patriot League Team, it was announced on Monday. Caroline Tolli (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport), Emily Waksmunski (Carrolltown, Pa./Bishop Carroll) and Jennifer Zymet (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) each became multi-term honorees after helping the Bison to a 13th Patriot League Championships title earlier this month.
Tolli recently concluded one of the top all-around careers in Bucknell track and field history. The senior carries a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in education and Spanish and minoring in Latin American studies. This year she received the Alvin F. Jackson, Jr. Memorial Award, presented “for outstanding academic and athletic achievement and future promise as Bucknell alumni” at the 52nd Annual Bucknell Athletics Senior Recognition Dinner. In her four years with the Bison, Tolli was twice been voted the Patriot League Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She has also been named to the Bucknell Dean's List every term and earned seven selections to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. A two-time member of the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, Tolli now has six Academic All-Patriot League citations.
On the track, Tolli continued to break records this spring. Most recently, she set Bucknell's No. 1 time in the 1,500 meters (4:25.55) at the Virginia Challenge just last weekend. Prior to that, she anchored the 4x800 relay that won the Patriot League title with the fourth-fastest time in program history (8:53.67). It was her third career gold medal in the outdoor 4x800 at the conference meet. Also at the Patriot League Championships this spring, Tolli placed second in both the 800 and 1,500 meters.
Tolli's athletic success has been recognized repeatedly. In April she became the first Bison in more than a decade to win two awards at the Bucknell senior awards dinner, adding the Christy Mathewson Award, presented to the top senior athletes, to her Alvin F. Jackson, Jr. Memorial citation. She has received All-Patriot League honors 13 times in her career as well. Tolli will graduate with numerous program top-10 marks, among them the outdoor 1,500 record as well as the top marks in the outdoor 4x800 (8:44.94) and indoor mile (4:49.99).
Waksmunski claimed her fifth career Academic All-Patriot League Team citation on Monday. The junior has a 3.93 GPA as a civil engineering major. Among her academic accolades already is the Alan J. Shepherd Scholarship from the Society of American Military Engineers. She has also been named to the Bucknell Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll all five possible terms. During the fall 2012 semester, Waksmunski posted an impressive 4.0 GPA.
Like Tolli, Waksmunski was a member of the 4x800 relay that won the Patriot League title earlier this month, giving her a gold medal in the event in each of the last two seasons. At the conference championships, she also placed 11th in the 1,500 meters, an event in which she never placed lower than third during the regular season. Waksmunski finished the year ranking in the top 10 all-time at Bucknell with two indoor and four outdoor 4x800 relays.
Zymet collected third first Academic All-Patriot League Team honor outdoors and second overall thanks to a 3.45 GPA in education. The junior was also named to the academic squad during the indoor season this year. During her career, Zymet is a two-time member of the Bucknell Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll as well.
Zymet won her third consecutive 400-meter title at the Patriot League Championships earlier this month, making her undefeated in the event at the outdoor conference meet. Only two other runners in league history have won at least three gold medals in the 400 meters. This spring, Zymet claimed her title with a school-record time of 54.98 seconds. The 400 was not the only event that Zymet won, however. She was also a member of the first-place 4x100 relay that also set a school record in 46.68 seconds and took third in the 200 meters.
Prior to the championship meet, Zymet was a member of the 4x200 relay that twice broke the Bucknell record, ultimately running 1:39.34 at the Penn Relays. More recently, she led off the 4x400 that set the school record at 3:45.69 at the ECAC Championships. With her spring campaign at a close, Zymet claimed at least a share of four different school records in 2013.
The Academic All-Patriot League Team was added for all sports to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the track. The women's track and field team has 10 student-athletes. Student-athletes must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and play an integral part in the team's success. Award winners are determined by a vote of the league's sports information directors who cannot vote for their own athletes.
On the men's side, Bucknell's Leonard Joseph and Luke Webster were both named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team.
