LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Alexandra Romanelli (Galloway, N.J./Absegami), a captain on the track and field team, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held in Terrace Room on Tuesday, April 30.
Romanelli won the Ronald J. "Pete" Pedrick Award, presented "in recognition of demonstrated improvement and special contributions to Bucknell athletics over a four-year period." Romanelli shared the award with Evan Zimmer of the men's tennis team, who was the male selection.
Romanelli has steadily climbed up the ranks throughout her career in the long jump and triple jump. At the Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships, she finished 10th in the long jump and improved her placing with each passing year until she earned Second Team All-League honors with a runner-up finish as a junior and last winter took fourth. She followed a similar trend in the triple jump, starting with a sixth-place finish as a rookie and earning her first career league title last winter as the Bison also captured the team trophy for the third time during Romanelli's tenure.
Outdoors, the native of Galloway, N.J., has improved from 11th in the long jump at the Patriot League Championships to fifth last spring. She will look to top the podium yet again this coming weekend as she and her teammates compete for another team title at Bethlehem, Pa.
Not surprisingly, Romanelli has improved her marks with each passing year as well. With at least one meet remaining in her career, she ranks fourth all-time at Bucknell in the indoor triple jump (38-9 ¾) and is tied for eighth in the indoor long jump (18-3 ¼). She also holds the 10th-best mark in the outdoor triple jump at 38-0 ¼. None of her top-10 marks came until midway through her junior campaign, further emphasizing the strides she has made during her career.
Bucknell is a highly-selective, privately endowed liberal arts institution with an enrollment of 3,500 undergraduate students. Bucknell competes in NCAA Division I as a member of the Patriot League and has full membership along with American, Army, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy. Bucknell has won the Presidents' Cup, signifying the Patriot League's all-sports champion, in 17 of 22 years, including 13 of the last 15.
Bucknell annually ranks among the national leaders in graduation rate and is fifth in Division I in the total number of CoSIDA Academic All-America selections, with 123 national Academic All-Americans since 1970.
