BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - In its final meet before the Patriot League Championships, Bucknell women's track and field dominated competition at the Maroon & Gold Invitational in Bloomsburg, Pa., on Saturday. The Bison logged more than a dozen individual victories and Emily Ando cleared the third-best height in the pole vault in program history with a mark of 12-2 ½.
Of Bucknell's winners, only Ando set a top-10 mark. The junior bested her previous career best by one inch and won the event easily with her 12-2 ½.
The Bison pulled off a sweep of the jumps events. Laura Lutzker won the high jump, clearing 5-3, while Alyssa Cardillo was the long jump winner. Cardillo finished with a top mark of 17-10 ¾ for the victory and led the way for Bucknell to take first through fourth in the event. Following her were Olivia Massey (17-3 ¼), Devon McDonald (16-11 ½) and Alexandra Romanelli (16-9 ¼). Jessica Matsinger was the only competitor in the triple jump, making her an automatic winner.
Bucknell also swept the throws as Sophia Nnadi (shot put), Abby Monaghan (discus), Kathryn Wahls (hammer) and Tayler Siegrist (javelin) each brought home gold. Nnadi threw 43-1 ½ in the shot, returning to form from earlier in the season. The distance was one inch shy of the freshman's personal best that also ranks ninth all-time at Bucknell. Siegrist's throw of 136-7 in the javelin was her best of the year.
The Bison also took second place in the shot put thanks to Tara Lee. Monaghan was second in the hammer throw and Dayna Simone was runner-up in the javelin.
On the track, gold medals came in the 800 meters as well as the 1,500 meters, 5,000 and both hurdles races. Kylie Pearse won her second event of the year by taking the title in the 800. The sophomore, who also has a win in the steeplechase this spring, led the field in 2:16.09.
Emily Waksmunski, Maddie Dulac and Leigh Ann Labate went 1-2-3 in the 1,500. The most dominant race for the Bison turned out to be the 5,000, however. Stephanie Bryan won the event, but Bucknell took first through seventh in the race as a team.
Although Bucknell won both hurdles competitions, the title went to two different Bison. Jen Silvestri won the 100 hurdles in 15.59 seconds, while Allison Daley was the top finisher in the 400 hurdles, finishing in 1:04.57. Chelsea Lodato and Valerie Sans also took second and third, respectively, in the longer race.
Bucknell's next test will be at the Patriot League Championships May 3-4 in Bethlehem, Pa. The Bison women have won more outdoor titles than any other team in conference history but will be looking to rebound from a second-place finish last spring.
