LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's track made it on the podium in three more events and several more claimed top-10 finishes on the final day of the Bison Outdoor Classic at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Sunday. Among the top finishers were the 4x100 and 4x800 relays and Yanelis Mestre, who set a career best in the pole vault to tie for eighth.
"Overall it was a breakout meet for the outdoor season," said head coach Kevin Donner. "Both teams had many season and personal bests as well as some all-time top-10 performances and ECAC/IC4A performances. Last week I felt we were a week or two behind because of the weather and Spring Break layoff, and now I feel as though we are where we need to be going into the last few weeks of the regular season."
Bucknell placed three in the top 10 in the pole vault. Joining Mestre was Emily Ando and Autumn Schellenberger. Ando tied for third, clearing 11-8 ½. Both Mestre and Schellenberger were eighth with a top height of 11-2 ½. That was the best of Mestre's career and moves her into seventh all-time in program history.
Both the 4x100 and 4x800 were also third. The shorter relay clocked in at 47.90, while the 4x800 crossed the line in 9:49.25.
The sprints and 800-meter distance seemed to be lucky ones for the Bison. Sasha Hornock was sixth in the 100 (12.49) and seventh in the 200 (25.55). Jennifer Zymet also took sixth in the 400 meters (56.56). Caroline Tolli fell about one second shy of her personal best in the 800. The senior was seventh at the meet with a time of 2:13.82.
In other field event highlights, Sophia Nnadi was sixth in the shot put with a top mark of 42-6 ¾. The Bison had two more top-10 finishers in the hammer throw as Kathryn Wahls and Abby Monaghan placed fifth and seventh, respectively. Wahls broke 150 feet for the first time this season, posting a distance of 154-11. Monaghan came in at 144-1, which was also a season best.
Alexandra Romanelli placed fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 35-3. Just behind her in sixth was teammate Jessica Matsinger. The sophomore cleared 35-0 ¼.
It won't be long before the Bison are back in action on their home turf. The Bucknell Team Challenge is slated for next Saturday, April 20 at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium in one of the final scored meets leading up to the Patriot League Championships next month.
