LEWISBURG, Pa. - Kim Nagotko broke two school records and Bison women's track won three individual titles at the Bucknell Team Challenge at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The Bison finished second in the team standings, trailing only Penn State in one of the final meets before the start of the championship season.
Nagotko had a meet for the ages as the sophomore set new Bucknell standards in the 100 and 200 meters. Nagotko was third overall in the 100 with a time of 12.05, knocking three-hundredths of a second off her previous career best. That also topped the previous record of 12.07 set by Tricia Plasko in 1990.
Nagotko's day also included a 24.59-second performance in the 200, which bests the previous record set by Yetunde Daniels in 2000 by one-thousandth of a second. Nagotko entered the race with a career best of 24.86 seconds. She placed second overall in the race on Saturday.
Sasha Hornock placed just behind Nagotko in the 200 meters, finishing third. The senior had a career best of her own, running 25.05 for the seventh-fastest time in program history.
Bucknell's wins came in the middle distances and field events. Caroline Tolli was the lead finisher in the 800 with a time of 2:12.42 and also helped the 4x800 to a win in 9:56.81. The third victory went to Abby Monaghan in the discus with a mark of 150-5.
"I thought both of our teams competed very tough in the cold and windy conditions," said head coach Kevin Donner after the meet. "The wind really affected the field events and the races that were 400 meters and up quite a bit, but most of our athletes handled the adversity very well and will be prepared if we get similar weather in the championship meets. The short sprints and hurdlers had favorable winds that were legal and our athletes really took advantage and ran some outstanding races against great competition. It was great to see four more school records."
Bucknell had a solid 2-3 finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase thanks to Kylie Pearse and Maddie Dulac. Pearse was runner-up in 11:15.35, knocking 10 seconds off her previous personal best and moving up to sixth on the program record list. Dulac took third in 11:23.27.
Other top finishes for Bucknell included a runner-up performance for the 4x100 relay (47.74) and Emily Ando in the pole vault (11-2 ½). Emily Waksmunski and Morgan Roche placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 1,500 meters. Joining Monaghan in the throws were Sophia Nnadi in the shot put and Kathryn Wahls in the hammer throw. Both Bison placed fourth in their respective events.
Bucknell finished second in the team standings with 128 points. Leading the nine-team field was Penn State with 223. Duquesne was third with 74 points.
Bucknell is just two weeks out from its championship schedule. The Bison will compete at the Penn Relays and Bloomsburg Maroon & Gold Invitational next weekend before traveling to Bethlehem, Pa., for the Patriot League Championships May 3-4.
