LEWISBURG, Pa. – Coming off a pair of top-10 team finishes at the Colonial Relays, Bucknell men's and women's track and field will return home to host its first outdoor meet of the season with the Bison Outdoor Classic April 13-14 at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Events begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Live results on both days will be available at BucknellBison.com.
SPRINTS/HURDLES
- The men's squad placed second in the team standings at the Colonial Relays with 116 points. Of those, 44 came from the sprints and hurdles, more than any other event area. Christian Lupica totaled 34 points, including his finishes in two relays. The sophomore would have beat 20 schools and placed 12th with his point total alone.
- Lupica was named the Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week on Monday based in part on his performance in the hurdles. He was second overall and first among collegiate runners in the 110-meter high hurdles, setting a school record (14.25) in the finals. He ran another career best in the 400 hurdles (53.24), which ranks third in program history and earned him third in the race. Lupica has not placed lower than third in any of his seven races this year and remains undefeated as a member of the 4x100 relay.
- Chrissy Haney joined in the hurdle success with her 400-meter hurdle performance. The freshman was eighth overall with a career-best 1:02.55. Haney entered the meet not being ranked in the program's top 10 in any event. She left the meet with the No. 4 time in the 400 hurdles and the No. 7 time with the distance medley relay (11:57.32) for which she ran the 400-meter leg with Beth Braunegg, Morgan Roche and Caroline Tolli.
- Kim Nagotko has set two program top-10 marks in each of her two meets this season. Most recently, the sophomore moved into fourth all-time at Bucknell in the 200 meters, clocking at 24.86 and helped the 4x200 relay to a school record in 1:41.35 with Jennifer Zymet, Sasha Hornock and Jess Bridle. A week earlier, she cracked the top 10 in the 100 (12.35) and the 4x100 (47.93).
- Kevin Tapper ran a career-best 49.18 in the 400 meters, placing third. It was the sophomore's first career race with a sub-50.0.
MID-DISTANCE/DISTANCE
- Kylie Pearse did not compete outdoors during her freshman campaign and the sophomore is making up for lost time. She has scored in each of her three races through the first two meets of the season. After winning the steeplechase at UMBC on March 30, Pearse placed sixth in the 3,000 meters and fourth with the 4x1500 at the Colonial Relays.
- Braunegg highlighted the middle distance finishes for the Bucknell women. The junior ran the best 1,500-meter time of her career, clocking in at 4:33.60 and taking the eighth-best mark in program history.
- Nearly half of the Bucknell women's team points came in distances 800 meters and up. The Bison totaled 23 of their 53 points, accounting for 43.4 percent of their scoring, in the middle and long distances.
- Competing in his first meet of the outdoor season, John Dugan scored in both of his events. The sophomore was third in the 3,000 and sixth with the 4x1500.
THROWS
- Bucknell's success in the men's team standings came from its depth as there were only two individual wins. One was the 4x100 relay and the other was Leonard Joseph in the hammer throw. The senior threw 194-6, which was an IC4A-qualifying mark despite being nearly 12 feet shy of his personal record.
- Luke Webster has competed five times through two meets and has placed in the top seven in all of them. Last weekend, the senior's performance sheet included a second consecutive runner-up finish in the discus and a fifth-place outing in the shot put.
- The Bucknell men scored in every throws event at the Colonial Relays. Tallying points were Webster (fifth) and Quinten Marcott (eighth) in the shot put, Webster (second) and Joseph (sixth) in the discus, Joseph (first), Mottola (third) and Jack Fellows (seventh) in the hammer throw, and Pat Mulrooney (eighth) in the javelin.
- By placing fourth in the discus last weekend, Abby Monaghan has earned a top-five finish in the event for the 14th time in her career. That run comes in 22 career meets.
- Tara Lee made strides in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 39-2 ½ at the Colonial Relays. Although still just her second meet, it was the first time in her outdoor career that she had broken the 38-foot barrier. Lee's indoor career best is 38-10 ¼.
JUMPS
- Bucknell got some top-notch performances out of its men's triple jumpers. Ray Holmes and Tapper both set career bests that are among the best marks in program history, while Alex Prieto set a season best. Holmes, who placed second at the Colonial Relays, remained in third in program history with a jump of 49-4 ¼. Tapper cracked the top 10 with 47-3 ¾, which was good for fifth at the meet. He now holds the No. 7 slot.
- Holmes has held down the No. 3 triple jump ranking at Bucknell for nearly a year now. The junior originally moved into that spot at the 2012 Bison Outdoor Classic with a distance of 48-8. That jump was his career best until last weekend.
- Alyssa Cardillo logged a season best in the long jump, clearing 17-10 ¾. The jump was less than one foot off her career best (17-11 ½) that came back at the 2011 Bloomsburg Open.
LOOKING BACK
- Bucknell had some strong performances at the 2012 Bison Outdoor Classic, but it did not capture any individual golds at the unscored meet. In 2011, however, the Orange & Blue got six wins from the men and three from the women. Among those returning this spring are Jason Brown (high jump), Joseph (hammer throw), Chelsea Lodato (800m) and Zymet (400m).
- Ted Heitzman won the javelin in 2011 and set a school record in the process. His distance of 237-8 still stands as the best throw in program history.
- Hana Casalnova and Tolli made up a solid duo for Bucknell in the 1,500 meters in 2012, placing 12th and 13th, respectively. Both ran the best times of their career in that race. Casalnova's 4:31.14 still ranks fourth on the program ledger, while Tolli's 4:31.18 is fifth. Casalnova also ran a then-career-best in the 800 (2:10.95) at that meet.
- Also in 2012, Joseph broke 200 feet in the hammer throw for the first time in his career. Then a junior, Joseph finished second with a mark of 200-1.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Bison will stay at home for its next meet. The Bucknell Team Challenge is slated for April 20 at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The final home meet of the season, it will also be Senior Day for the Bison cross country and track & field programs.
