CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - All-Patriot League selections Mike Nicholson and Christian Treat both finished in the top five of the 200-yard individual medley and six different Bison individuals scored points in swimming competition as the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team stands fifth in the team standings after the first day of competition at the ECAC Championships, which are taking place this weekend at Harvard's Blodgett Pool.
Nicholson's third-place finish in the 200 IM paced the Bison on Friday. The junior was third in the prelims and then matched that in the finals. Treat was sixth in the prelims and moved up to fifth in the finals. Nicholson was second in the event a year ago, while Treat was fourth.
Billy Krause was Bucknell's top finisher in the 500 free, placing ninth. His finals time of 4:34.01 was faster than all but six swimmers in the "A" final. George Beatty was five spots behind Krause in 14th place.
Freshman Chris Ortiz finished 14th in the 50 free in 21.44, just .02 ahead of teammate Daniel Wallace who was 15th.
Three individual swimming events, two relays and one diving competition were held Friday and the Bison scored points in all of them.
Both Bucknell relays (200 free, 400 medley) placed sixth. The 400 medley relay of Will Rappaport, Treat, Nicholson and Wallace posted the No. 10 time in school history (3:23.51) in the event.
Divers Tyler Wenzel (12th), Patrick Alvermann (14th) and Jon Jones (16th) did not advance to the finals of diving, but still added nine points to the team total.
The ECAC Championships will continue Saturday at Blodgett Pool. The three-day event will wrap up on Sunday.
