LEWISBURG, Pa. - For the third consecutive night Mike Nicholson broke a school record en route to a top-four finish at the Patriot League Championships. After surpassing his own records in the 200 IM and 400 IM on Thursday and Friday, Nicholson broke the 10-year-old mark in the 200 breast on Saturday. His fourth-place performance in the 200 breast equaled Erik Heinemann (fourth in 200 fly) for the best performance by a Bison on the final day of the three-day meet in Kinney Natatorium.
Bucknell finished third in the final team standings, marking its eighth consecutive top-three showing at the eight-team event.
Led by Nicholson's performance, the 200 breast was the strongest event for the Bison on Saturday. Christian Treat took fifth and Ben Seketa was eighth, marking the only event in which Bucknell had three "A" finalists. Tim Perley also scored, finishing 16th.
Stephen Schwanhausser had held the 200 breast record (2:01.68) since 2003 and both Nicholson and Treat surpassed it on Saturday. Nicholson's time of 1:59.75 in the prelims broke it as did Treat's 2:01.06. Both went even faster in the finals with Nicholson clocking a 1:59.61 and Treat touching the wall in 2:00.46.
Nicholson now owns school records in four events: 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 fly and 200 breast. He has nine career top-seven finishes at the Patriot League Championships. He had never before competed in the 200 breast at the league meet.
Heinemann equaled Nicholson's fourth-place showing in the 200 fly. His time of 1:49.71 in the prelims is second in program history to only Nicholson. Senior Billy Krause was sixth in the race, while Collin Greene placed 15th.
Greene was also one of three Bison to score in the 1,650 free as he finished 11th. Freshman Brian Phillips placed fifth and sophomore George Beatty was eighth. Phillips posted the No. 3 time in school history in the 1,650 free, while his 1,000 split was the No. 5 time.
Other top finishers for Bucknell on the final day of the Patriot League Championships included Tyler Wenzel's seventh-place showing off the one-meter diving board, Wes Marberry's seventh-place finish in the 200 backstroke and Matt Hadley's 13th-place race in the 100 free.
Bucknell's 2012-13 season will continue next weekend with the ECAC Championships at Harvard. The three-day meet commences Friday, March 1.
