YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Caroline Tolli set a school record in the 1,000 and Bucknell women's track and field moved into first place after day one of the Youngstown State National Invitational in Youngstown, Ohio, on Friday. The Bison have 85.5 points after eight events thanks in part to Tolli's record-setting victory as well as wins from Katie Jessee and Jennifer Zymet.
Tolli and Hana Casalnova both set facility records at the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) in the 1,000, but it was Tolli that topped the field with a time of 2:50.88. That was almost 0:06 seconds faster than the previous facility record and broke Casalnova's program standard. Casalnova was second in 2:54.22, while Emily Waksmunski took fourth in 2:58.57 at the meet.
Tolli's performance was the second time in as many years that a Bison has broke the school 1,000-meter record at the Youngstown State meet. Casalnova did so last year at 2:52.96 before improving it to 2:52.33 later in the season. That record stood until Friday night.
Bucknell claimed two more individual wins in the early goings of the meet. Zymet defended her 500-meter title with a time of 1:16.06 with Jenn Silvestri taking fifth in the event at 1:17.18. Jessee was the top finisher in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:42.36. Also finishing in the top five were Alison Billas and Kate VanNess in third and fifth, respectively.
The pack running moved Bucknell into an early lead in the team standings. Through the meet's first eight events, the Bison have a 12.5-point lead on second-place Dayton. Bucknell stands at 85.5 points, while the Flyers are at 73.
Other top finishes for Bucknell came in the field events. Yanelis Mestre registered a second straight weekend of top clearances in the pole vault. The sophomore tied for fifth with a height of 11-5 ¾. That was a career best and gives her sole possession of seventh in the program record books.
Olivia Massey and Alyssa Cardillo were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the long jump and Abby Monaghan took fourth in the weight throw.
Competition at Youngstown State resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m.
