NEW YORK, N.Y. - Ben Seketa and Mike Nicholson posted two victories apiece as the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team ended a month-long layoff with a 209-91 loss at Columbia Saturday afternoon at Uris Pool. The Bison fell to 4-3 on the year, while the Lions improved to 3-2.
Seketa and Nicholson combined for all four victories for the Bison, who were competing on the road for the final time during the 2012-13 regular season. Seketa won the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200 breast, while Nicholson claimed first in the 200 fly and 200 IM. Nicholson also added a runner-up showing in the 100 fly, while Seketa was part of the 800 free relay team that placed third in the final event of the dual meet.
Diver Tyler Wenzel was also a standout performer for the Bison on Saturday. Bucknell's top finisher off both boards (fourth place), Wenzel, a freshman, recorded a season-best score of 253.20 off the three-meter board, placing him No. 6 in program history. He previously ranked eighth on that list. Wenzel's 255.45 off the one-meter board was his second-best mark of the year.
Erik Heinemann (200 free) and Brian Phillips (1,650 free) posted Bucknell's runner-up showings on Saturday, while Billy Krause (200 fly), Christian Treat (200 breast), Heinemann (500 free) and the 200 medley and 800 free relays recorded third-place finishes.
Seketa (100 breast, 200 breast), Nicholson (100 fly, 200 fly, 200 IM), Heinemann (200 free, 500 free), Wenzel (one-meter, three-meter) and Will Rappaport (100 back, 200 back) were each the top finisher for the Bison in an event more than once.
"We faced a very strong Columbia team and overall we competed well," commented seventh-year Bucknell head coach Dan Schinnerer. "It was important for us to get back into competition after our long break due to exams and winter break. We wanted to be able to pick up right where we led off in December and in large part we did."
The Bison will return to action next weekend when they host Patriot League opponents Colgate Friday, Jan. 11, at 10 a.m. and Army Saturday, Jan. 12, at 1 p.m.
