LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's swimming and diving team showed off its depth Friday at Kinney Natatorium, with 10 different individuals winning events in a 193-92 dual-meet victory over Patriot League rival Colgate. Mike Nicholson claimed a pair of victories for the Bison, who turn right back around on Saturday to host another league foe in Army.
Colgate earned victories in the 100-yard backstroke, the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly, but Bucknell won all the rest, not counting a couple of late events that were scored as exhibition swims. Nicholson was a double-winner in the 100 breaststroke (58.32) and 200 backstroke (1:57.77). He normally specializes in the individual medleys and 200 fly, but he remained unbeaten in those two events this season.
Nicholson did swim the butterfly leg on the opening 200 medley relay, joining Bryce Suchomel, Ben Seketa and Chris Ortiz for a winning time of 1:35.29. Bucknell went 1-2 in the relay to start the meet with a 15-2 lead.
The margin grew quickly from there, as Collin Greene (9:57.37) and Jeff Shanley followed with a 1-2 finish in the 1,000 free. Matt Hadley (1:45.15) then won the 200 free by a healthy .71 seconds.
After Colgate's Des Cairns won the 100 back, Bucknell dominated the next two events. In the 100 breast, Nicholson, Matthew Stevens and Cameron James swept the top three places, and then Erik Heinemann (1:55.74), Will Rappaport and Edward Jew did the same in the 200 fly.
Steve Grune (47.40) and Christian Treat took first and second in the 100 free, and then Nicholson and Sam Mackie (2:11.34) led 1-2-3 sweeps in the 200 back and 200 breast, respectively. Rappaport turned in his second runner-up finish of the day in the 200 breast.
Brian Phillips (4:47.95) and George Beatty grabbed the top two places in the 500 free, and later James touched first in the 200 IM (1:57.69) as an exhibition swim.
Bucknell fared just as well in the diving, where the Bison had three competitors to just one for Colgate. Tyler Wenzel took the 1-meter event with a score of 261.3. Runner-up Jon Jones posted a personal-best 239.7, which moves him up to seventh place on Bucknell's career list. Patrick Alvermann finished third.
Jones won the 3-meter competition with a score of 247.13, followed by Wenzel and Alvermann.
Bucknell competes against Army in another dual on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Kinney Natatorium.
