Bucknell Field Hockey Ends Overtime Winning Streak in 4-3 Loss at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Bucknell field hockey nearly came all the way back from a two-goal deficit at Rutgers, but the Bison's Sunday afternoon ended with a 4-3 loss in overtime at the Bauer T&F Complex. It was Bucknell's first overtime defeat in more than two years and drops its overall record down to .500 at 6-6.
The Bison entered halftime without a goal and trailing by two, but Leigh Hillman and Kayla Sullivan changed that in a hurry not long after play resumed. The two Bison scored within the first seven minutes of the second half. Hillman's score just 1:11 into the start of the half was her third in two days and brings her season total to four goals.
Sullivan, who registered her first career goal with less than a minute remaining in Bucknell's 7-0 rout of Colgate yesterday, knotted things up at 2-2 after a mere 6:08 had ticked off the clock in the second half on Sunday.
Rutgers (6-6) responded with a goal from Alicia Stever 33 seconds later to retake the lead. The 3-2 score held for much of the remainder of the game despite several scoring opportunities for the Scarlet Knights. By the end of the game, Rutgers had a 21-9 advantage in shots. Shots were also in their favor in the second half alone, 11-5.
Despite the lopsided statistics, Bucknell made its way back into the mix with the clock winding down. As has become a habit, the Bison stepped up with their backs against the wall. Tayler Siegrist capitalized on a penalty corner, shooting directly off the insert from Amie Pritchard and getting the ball past Rutgers' Sarah Stuby in goal. The effort re-tied the contest at three apiece with 1:36 left in regulation.
Siegrist now has seven goals on the year, which nearly doubles her previous single-season high of four set last fall. Her 18 points this season is a career high, topping her total of 11 as a freshman.
While Bucknell had established itself as a force in overtime, on Sunday it was Rutgers that had the last word. The Scarlet Knights' Lisa Patrone scored 1:51 into the extra period to give her team the sudden-victory decision. Patrone, a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2011, finished the game with four points (1G, 2A).
It was Bucknell's first overtime loss since falling in a strokeoff to Indiana on Sept. 26, 2010. The Bison went 7-0 in overtime games between losses.
Bucknell's three goals on Sunday is its most against Rutgers in series history. Entering the game, the Scarlet Knights had outscored the Bison 10-1 and earned three shutouts in their previous four meetings dating back to 1984.
Bucknell goalkeeper Erica Perrine (6-6) took the loss, allowing all four goals but making seven saves in 71:51 of play. Stuby (6-6) claimed the win for Rutgers with three goals allowed and one save. Also defensively, Liz Wills collected a defensive save for the Bison. Wills now has four stops on the season.
Bucknell will now turn its attention back to Patriot League play, heading to Holy Cross on Oct. 6 for a 1 p.m. contest in Worcester, Mass. The Bison will then stay in Massachusetts for a 2 p.m. matchup at Harvard the following day.
