LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell men's soccer team had plenty of possession time but could not make the most of it, and visiting Saint Joseph's pulled out a 1-0 decision on Tim Lazorko's goal with 9:01 to play on Tuesday night at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison saw their five-game winning streak and four-game shutout streak come to an end, and they were kept off the scoreboard themselves for the first time all year.
Bucknell (5-2-2) outshot the Hawks (3-5) 23-12, but placed only two of those 23 shots on goal. Both came in the second half, one on a Brendan Burgdorf header on a long throw-in, the other on a sharp-angle shot by Vinny Cinotti that was blocked by keeper Andrew D'Ottavi at the right post.
The Bison had two good free-kick opportunities just outside the penalty box in the first half. Burgdorf sent the first one just wide, while CK Kumah's attempt was deflected by the wall high over the bar.
Saint Joseph's had very few good scoring chances in the game, although they almost took the lead with 12 minutes to play when Bison keeper Mike Lansing ventured well off his line to break up a play. Lansing ended up on the ground, and Lazorko lobbed a shot off the top of the crossbar.
Only three minutes later fullback Brendan Reilly delivered a long pass that was headed by Jake Nelson on to the streaking Lazorko coming in from the left side, and Lazorko's shot from 16 yards out snuck into the right side of the net.
"This was one of those games where we did not execute in areas where we needed to execute, specifically in front of the goal," said head coach Brendan Nash. "It was easy to tell where our problem area was tonight, but I told the team we have to learn from a little bit of adversity and improve from it. I hope we learned a lesson tonight as we head into a tough environment at American on Saturday."
Jesse Klug led all players with eight shot attempts, while Burgdorf had four and Kumah three. Lansing and D'Ottavi were both credited with two saves. Bucknell led 8-3 in corner kicks.
The last goal conceded by the Bison came late in a 2-1 win at La Salle on Sept. 7. Lazorko's marker ended Bucknell's scoreless streak at 462:06, the second-longest in program history.
The Bison were coming off a 1-0 win at Lehigh in their Patriot League opener on Sunday night, and they will return to conference action on Saturday at American at 1 p.m.
