WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Bucknell men's soccer team suffered its first Patriot League defeat of the season on Saturday at American, as Dale McDonald's goal in the 44th minute was enough for the Eagles to pull out the 1-0 win at Reeves Field. The Bison fell to 5-3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Patriot League, while American improved to 5-4-1, 1-0-1.
Bucknell conceded only four shots in 90 minutes, but one of them went in off the foot of McDonald just 1:21 before halftime. The sequence started with a Bison free kick that was broken up and then cleared with a long pass. McDonald, a defender and Bison keeper Mike Lansing all converged on the loose ball. McDonald was able to reach through the defender's legs and poke the ball past Lansing, then he caught up to it on the other side and scored what proved to be the winning goal.
The Bison took 13 shots, including three that hit posts and one on a Brendan Burgdorf breakaway that just went over the bar. Burgdorf led the Bison with four shots, while CK Kumah had three.
Lansing was credited with one save, while Billy Knutsen had five for American. This is the fourth straight year that American has beaten Bucknell in the regular season, but in 2009 and 2010 the Bison came back to beat the Eagles in the Patriot League championship match.
"This was another example of how Patriot League games so often come down to who can make the most out of the one good chance they might get," said coach Brendan Nash after the game. "It went in our favor last week against Lehigh, and today was the opposite situation."
The Bison now have a week off before hosting Navy next Saturday at 2 p.m. at Emmitt Field.
