LEWISBURG, Pa. - Elena Vidrascu captured her first tournament title of the year, pulling out a comeback victory against Villanova's Tori Smyth in the Flight A singles championship at the Bucknell Invitational on Sunday morning. Paired with an ultimate win in the doubles backdraw with Maria Cioffi, Vidrascu now has a career combined record of 69-62, tying for 19th all-time at Bucknell.
While Sunday marked Vidrascu's second consecutive singles final, it was her first title of the 2012-13 campaign. The Bison junior fell behind early to Smyth, dropping the first set 6-1. Vidrascu then worked her way back into the match, winning the second 6-4 and ultimately pulling out the title with a 10-8 score in the super tiebreaker.
Bucknell now has three tournament titles this fall. All three include Vidrascu and Cioffi. The two teamed up for a doubles championship last week at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational. Cioffi also defeated Vidrascu in Flight A singles at Mount St. Mary's.
The Bison narrowly missed a fourth title in today with Jen Bush and Stephanie Pino taking on Smyth and Allison Kruse in the Flight A doubles final. The Villanova tandem came away with the victory, 8-3.
In the doubles backdraw, Vidrascu and Cioffi teamed up for a final win over teammates Elizabeth Morgan and Christie Schneider, 8-0.
Bucknell will now turn its attention to the Saint Joseph's Invitational. Play in Philadelphia runs Sept. 28-30.
