Bush, Cioffi Advance to Singles Semis at Saint Joseph's Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – Bucknell women's tennis' Maria Cioffi and Jen Bush move through to the singles semifinals at the Saint Joseph's Invitational in Philadelphia and the Bison collected eight more wins at the Bloomsburg Fall Classic on their second day of a busy weekend. Play at both tournaments will resume tomorrow morning with Bucknell looking for at least one title at its third consecutive event.
Four Bison, including Cioffi, Bush, Lydia Colvin and Stephanie Pino, advanced to the singles quarterfinals in straight sets at Saint Joseph's on Saturday. Once they made it to that next round, however, competition got a bit stiffer. All but Pino were forced to a super tiebreak. Cioffi ultimately hung on for a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 win over Delaware's Carmen Lai in Flight 1, while Bush was a 6-2, 1-6, 10-6 winner over Drexel's Amanda Tilles in Flight 4.
Cioffi and Elena Vidrascu, who suffered her own difficult loss to Devi Jadeja of Saint Joseph's 1-6, 6-1, 10-5 in singles, dropped their doubles match as well. The last Bison duo still alive in the main draw, Cioffi and Vidrascu lost to Lai and Dorothy Safron, 8-3, in the semis.
A bit closer to home, Bucknell picked up eight total wins at the Bloomsburg Fall Classic, but only Claudia Silvers remains in the main draw. The sophomore opened her day with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over East Stroudsburg's Anne Vega and continued on with a 1-6, 6-1, 12-10 win opposite Wilkes' Annastasia English.
Silvers next meets Nicole Slagle of Bloomsburg for the title. The two met just last weekend in a Bucknell Invitational consolation match. Slagle won that matchup, 6-1, 6-3.
Christie Schneider and Sam Madnick also picked up singles wins in the main draw on Saturday. Schneider teamed up with Elizabeth Morgan for a first-round win in doubles as well.
