Whitney King Named Patriot League Women's Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year

Lewisburg, Pa. — Bucknell women's tennis senior Whitney King has been named the Women's Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year and one of six athletes selected to the Academic All-Patriot League team, the league announced Friday afternoon.

King became just the third Bucknell women's tennis athlete to earn Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year. She is joined by Kristina Lutter who took the honor in both 1993 and 1994 and Maria Cioffi who took the honor in 2014.

Six athletes across the Patriot League were named to the Academic All-League team, including King. With earning this honor for a third year in a row, King has become the second women's tennis player at Bucknell to accomplish the feat as she joins Maria Cioffi '16.

The senior earned her third First Team All-Patriot League honor in a row as the league announced last week and was the fourth Bucknell women's tennis player to make the All-Patriot League First Team three times in her career.

This season, King posted an overall 15-7 record in singles play and went 3-3 in singles in the Patriot League. In doubles play, King and her partner Abby Platt went 18-8 overall and 4-3 in the Patriot League. She also moved herself up in Bucknell's record books as she ended her Bison career 4th all-time in doubles wins with 80, 9th all-time in singles wins with 62 and 7th all-time in combined wins with 142.

Academically, a markets, innovation & design major, King has been a mainstay on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and the Bucknell Dean's list throughout her career as well as garnered a 3.91 GPA. The senior has also held several marketing and social media internships throughout her collegiate career and is a small business founder.

Alongside King being named the Women's Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year, Bucknell also earned the Men's Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year in Amar Tahirovic. This is just the sixth time in conference history that athletes from the same school won both the Men's and Women's Scholar Athletes of the Year.

Bucknell women's tennis has landed a student-athlete on the Academic All-Patriot League Team in five consecutive seasons.
