LEWISBURG, Pa. - Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) scored her third goal in two games on a penalty stroke in the final 13 seconds, but the late effort could not keep Bucknell field hockey from falling 3-1 to Ohio State at Graham Field on Sunday morning. Siegrist finished her weekend with eight points on three goals and two assists as the Bison's record now stands at 5-3.
By the time Siegrist stepped up to the cage to take her third penalty stroke of the season, Bucknell already trailed 3-0 to the Buckeyes (4-3). Ohio State's first two goals both came on penalty corners in the first half, the first coming off the stick of Danica Deckard and the second from Emma Royce.
Bucknell then settled into its usual flow for the remainder of the game. Ohio State had more offensive opportunities in the first half, maintaining possession for long stretches of time and getting 12 shots compared to Bucknell's five. The Bison defense held tough, however, and was able to limit the effectiveness of the Buckeyes' efforts.
Bucknell goalkeeper Erica Perrine (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) made some outstanding saves to keep it a 2-0 nothing game for nearly the entire second half. Shortly after halftime, the junior thwarted a 2-on-1 opportunity, standing tall to make a save on Deckard, who had seven shots on goal.
A few minutes later, Perrine and Maggie Murphy (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) teamed up for another defensive stand. With a scramble in front of the net, Ohio State had two shots turned away, first with a defensive save from Murphy. The rebound went to Deckard, who was then stopped by Perrine yet again.
Perrine finished with a season-high 13 saves. She is now 5-3 on the year.
After being held scoreless for more than 36 minutes, Ohio State claimed its final goal at the 4:46 mark. Some controversy had the officials conferring whether the ball actually crossed the goal line, but the call stood and put the Buckeyes in front 3-0.
Ohio State goalkeeper Emma Voelker earned the win with four saves, but the junior just missed the shutout after Siegrist netted her second penalty stroke in as many games. Siegrist is now 3-for-3 in strokes this season. She is also tied with Rachel Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) and Kiersten Sydnor (Shippensburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) with four goals on the year.
Bucknell will return to action next Saturday against Michigan, which was ranked 16th in the latest Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Poll. Game time is slated for 12 p.m. at Graham Field.
