LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Erica Perrine (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) made five saves and Bucknell field hockey drew more penalty corners than its opponent, but the Bison could not overcome No. 17 Michigan, falling 2-0 at Graham Field on Saturday afternoon. Bucknell is now 5-4 on the season heading into tomorrow's home matchup with Temple at 2 p.m.
"Huge improvement from last year's result to this year's result. It was really, really positive," said head coach Jeremy Cook, referencing last season's 5-0 loss to the Wolverines (6-3). "We had good chances to score in the second half. It was much better than in the first, so I thought we grew throughout the game. We put the pressure in the right places so that we gave ourselves a chance to win, which was what our goal was coming in. We just weren't able to finish, but it's a huge positive. I'm really happy."
Neither team had much to show for their efforts in the first half. After more than 20 minutes of play, just two shots, both for Michigan, had been put on the board and neither squad drew a penalty corner before halftime. The only noticeable result through the opening 35 minutes was a goal by Emy Guttman at 13:10.
At the break, Michigan had five shots, compared to two for Bucknell. The Wolverines eventually finished with 11 for the game. The Bison totaled five shots, two of which came on penalty corners. Bucknell finished with three corner opportunities.
It wasn't until more than 45 minutes had ticked off the clock that either team got a look at a penalty corner. Michigan drew just one corner in the contest, but it paid off. Rachael Mack, who now leads the Wolverines with eight goals on the season, scored on a hard-hit shot low past Perrine to put her team up 2-0.
Bucknell had more offensive opportunities than just its penalty corners. More than once the Bison were able to get around the defense on a breakaway, but each time the Wolverines recovered and got strong play from goalkeeper Haley Jones (6-3). Jones finished with three saves, all in the second half.
With her five saves, Perrine now has 152 in her career. That total makes the junior the 11th goalkeeper in program history to surpass the 150 mark. Perrine is now 5-4 on the season.
Bucknell will return to action tomorrow afternoon against Temple, a team that has won each of the last two meetings with the Bison. Action begins at 2 p.m. at Graham Field with live stats on GameTracker available at BucknellBison.com.
