FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) scored on a penalty shot and Kiersten Sydnor (Shippensburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) nabbed the game-winner in overtime to give Bucknell field hockey its first win of the season, defeating Fairfield 2-1 at University Field on Sunday afternoon. The Bison (1-1) have now won seven of their last eight, and each of the last five, overtime games dating back to the 2010 season.
Fairfield (0-2) put the first goal on the board as Felicitas Heinen scored on a penalty corner in the first six minutes of the game. With plenty of time remaining, Bucknell maintained its composure and knotted things up later in the half.
After a scoreless second half, the Orange and Blue completed the comeback in overtime. While Bucknell has plenty of experience in extra periods having gone to overtime in 13 games since 2009, it was one of the newest Bison who secured the victory. Playing in her second career collegiate contest, freshman Sydnor corralled a rebound and put her own shot past the Stags' goalkeeper just 1:02 into overtime.
Bucknell has now won each of its last five games to go into extra time. The Bison were 4-0 in overtime in 2011. Their last loss to come after regulation came in a stroke-off against Indiana on Sept. 26, 2010.
Sydnor's heroics would not have been possible if not for Siegrist's successful penalty shot late in the first half. The senior netted her first goal of the season with 6:16 remaining in the half. She is now 3-for-6 for her career in penalty shots.
Bucknell goalkeeper Erica Perrine (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) earned the win with five saves and one goal allowed. Also posting a defensive save was Liz Wills (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./William Penn Charter School). The Bison defense was again kept busy on Sunday, particularly in the second half. Fairfield fired off 11 shots and drew 11 penalty corners. Bucknell was held without a shot or a corner during that same stretch.
Maddy Sposito took the loss in goal for Fairfield with two saves.
When the Bison return to the field, it will be for their home opener on Sept. 2. Bucknell will host Lock Haven at 12 p.m. at Graham Field.
