LEWISBURG, Pa. - Amie Pritchard (Rumson, N.J./Kent School (Conn.)) made her first career goal a game winner as Bucknell field hockey defeated Lock Haven 3-1 at Graham Field on Sunday afternoon. Rachel Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) and Kiersten Sydnor (Shippensburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) added goals of their own in the home opener and propelled the Bison to a 2-1 record.
Misko was the first to get on the board, coming in from the left side of the circle and shooting low on Lock Haven's (2-2) Kelsey Moll. The Lady Eagles tied it up before the half, however, when Nikki Weaknecht corralled a rebound a penalty corner and shot the ball past Erica Perrine (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) in goal.
That penalty corner was the only one of the game for Lock Haven. Bucknell had more success in that category, and it was a corner that led to Pritchard's score early in the second half. After inserting the ball in play, Pritchard stationed herself at the post and was able to dump the ball in the net with an assist from Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison).
Bucknell finished the day with seven penalty corners, five of which came in the second half. The total is a turnaround from where the Bison found themselves after the first two games of the season in which they drew just two corners in both contests combined.
The shots also went in Bucknell's favor as it registered 11 on the day, compared to just four for Lock Haven.
The Bison played with increasing control as the game wore on and they continued to get their scoring opportunities late. Sydnor, who was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week last Monday, tallied her second career goal to give Bucknell some breathing room with 9:17 left to play. The freshman deflected a pass from Kelly Stefanowicz (Lansdale, Pa./Mount St. Joseph's Academy) right in front of the net, making the final score 3-1.
Sydnor now has two goals on the season, leading all Bison. She also had the game-winning overtime score at Fairfield last weekend.
Bucknell has now won back-to-back games against Lock Haven for just the second time in series history and the first time since 1999-2000. It was also the Bison's first win in regulation over the Lady Eagles since 1997 in a contest that ended with a 1-0 score.
Helping to secure Sunday's victory was Perrine (2-1) with two saves in goal. Lock Haven's Moll (2-2) made three saves and allowed all three goals to the Bison.
Bucknell will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Cornell at 7 p.m. at Graham Field. The Bison are 14-10-1 all-time against the Big Red.
