PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Schuylkill River) - The Bucknell women's rowing team had a couple of firsts Saturday at the Dad Vail Regatta. For the first time in program history, the Bison claimed the team points trophy at the nation's oldest collegiate regatta. Additionally, the varsity eight advanced to the grand final at the event for the first time, placing second.
In addition to the Bison firsts, the lightweight eight continued its tremendous success at the Dad Vail Regatta, capturing the gold medal at the event for the third time in four years to lead three Bison boats that raced in finals on Saturday.
The second varsity eight joined the varsity eight and lightweight eight by advancing to its final and posted a runner-up finish.
"This is a hallmark day for our program," commented Bucknell head coach Stephen Kish. "Three boats medaled today, but it was a 60-person effort. We are extremely proud of every member of our team today."
The lightweight eight easily captured its race, defeating second-place Buffalo by more than 15 seconds.
The varsity eight and second varsity eight nearly gave the Bison three winning boats, but both were edged for first place. The varsity eight came in second to Duke by just over two-tenths of a second, while the second varsity eight was just four-tenths of a second behind gold medal-winning Drexel.
The varsity eight advanced to its final thanks to a second-place showing in the morning semifinal. Bucknell finished runner-up to Miami in the semifinal and then crossed the line nearly 10 seconds ahead of the Hurricanes in the final.
The second varsity eight earned its finals berth thanks to its win in Friday's heat.
The freshman eight and freshman four were also in action on Saturday, but could not advance to their respective finals. The freshman eight, which posted the fourth-fastest time in the three semifinals, needed to finish in the top two in its semifinal, but was edged by Purdue for second by a bow ball, just .046 seconds. The freshman four also needed to finish in the top two in its semifinal, but ended up crossing the line fourth.
Bucknell will continue its busy weekend on Sunday when it rows at the Eastern Sprints in Cherry Hill, N.J.
