BETHLEHEM, Pa. - For the second consecutive day, Bucknell softball found itself overpowered by Patriot League foe Lehigh and dropped a pair of contests at Kaufman Field on Sunday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks, which improved to 24-14 overall and 8-0 in the conference, won 8-0 and 9-0 in two shortened games. The Bison are now 6-23 on the season and 0-8 in Patriot League play.
After falling 9-0 and 8-0 in Saturday's games, Bucknell was looking for a reversal of fortune but it was not in the cards. The Bison managed five total hits on Sunday, while the Mountain Hawks had 21. Included in Lehigh's offensive was Rosie Roessel who was 6-for-6 in both games combined. Jen Colquhoun also had two home runs in game two.
Colquhoun's first shot resulted in all three second-inning runs for Lehigh and made the score 6-0. She finished her day with a two-run homer in the fourth after Bucknell held Lehigh scoreless in the third. Colquhoun had five RBI in the game and six on the day. By the time the game was called, however, the Mountain Hawks had nine runs on nine hits.
Courtney Conover (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) took the pitching loss for Bucknell giving up six runs on six hits in 2.0 innings of work. Alex MacLean (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) pitched the final 2.0 innings in relief, allowing the final three runs on three hits. She also had three strikeouts.
Emily Bausher got her second win of the series in the one-hit combined shutout with Kelsey Lee. That one hit for Bucknell was a single up the middle in the top of the first off the bat of Meredith Dickson (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh). The Bison had one other base runner in the game as Kasey Segiel (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) drew a walk in the fifth.
The second game had largely been a continuation of the first in which Lehigh totaled 12 hits and Bucknell was limited to four. The Mountain Hawks did most of their run-scoring damage later in the game, putting up four runs on the board in the third inning and two more in the fourth. Their final run, which came home on a Bison fielding error in the bottom of the fifth, set the final at 8-0.
Bucknell's best chance of a run came during the second inning when Colie Escobar (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill) and Erin Cox (La Quinta, Calif./La Quinta) hit back-to-back outfield singles. Both got into scoring position.
MacLean allowed five earned runs on 12 hits in 4.2 innings during game one. She struck out one and walked one. Rebecca Bliss earned the complete-game win with a four-hit shutout that included three strikeouts.
Bucknell will return to action Thursday when it travels to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., for a doubleheader with Marist. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
