POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Bucknell softball snapped its scoreless streak but could not put an end to its winless stretch, falling 10-2 (5 inn.) and 4-2 to Marist at Gartland Field on Thursday afternoon. Colie Escobar (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) and Mallory Lyons (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) were heavily responsible for the Bison's scoring in each contest as both recorded two-RBI shots. Included in the offense was the third home run of the season from Lyons in game two.
Although Escobar and Lyons both earned two-RBI hits, they did it in very different ways. Escobar notched a two-out single in the third inning of game one. That brought home Lyons, who led off the frame with a single, and Meredith Dickson (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh), who followed with a walk.
Escobar now has five hits in her last seven games, but today marked her first career multi-RBI game.
Lyons earned her RBI with a home run to center field in the sixth inning of game two. The shot also scored Mary Horton (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), who had singled to left field in her pinch hitting appearance.
Lyons continues to lead Bucknell (6-25) in home runs. The sophomore entered the season without a long ball but now has three this spring.
Despite the offense from the Bison's underclassmen, Bucknell trailed in both games from the start. Marist (17-18) put eight runs on the board in the first inning of the first game. Thirteen total batters went to the plate with the first seven reaching base on a combination of hits, walks, hit-by-pitch and errors. Danielle Koltz earned doubles in each of her two at-bats in the first inning, and Megan Lamoureux singled in both of her at-bats.
Lamoureux eventually finished the game 3-for-3 with a home run in the fourth. It was the first of two homers for Marist in that inning as Alyssa Zahka also put one over the fence in right field.
Game two followed a similar trend although not quite at the same extreme. The Red Foxes scored three times in the bottom of the first as the first two batters reached on base hits. A sacrifice fly, an error and a double later, Marist had another multi-run lead. The advantage grew to 4-0 in the fifth inning with an RBI single from Zahka.
Alex MacLean (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) and Courtney Conover (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) continued to get the work in the pitchers' circle. MacLean (3-16) earned the decision in game one, allowing six earned runs on eight hits. She struck out three and walked two. Conover (1-2) allowed two earned runs on six hits in game two. The sophomore pitched 4.0 innings before giving way to MacLean who finished the contest without allowing another hit in 2.0 innings of work.
Bucknell will be back in action this weekend when it hosts Army at Becker Field. First pitch on Saturday is set for 1 p.m. The Bison will be collecting donations for the Angel 34 Foundation to support the fight against childhood cancer. Sunday's doubleheader will begin at noon.
