LEWISBURG, Pa. - One day after leading Bucknell to its seventh consecutive Patriot League title, the Bison women's rowing varsity eight was named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week Monday. The varsity eight, which won its Sunday morning race to clinch the team title, earned Patriot League Boat of the Year honors as well.
The varsity eight had to finish one spot better than Navy in the regatta's final event to secure the team crown and it defeated second-place MIT by 2.42 seconds. It marked the seventh straight time Bucknell's varsity eight won at the Patriot League Championships as it earned Boat of the Year honors for the seventh consecutive year.
The varsity eight consisted of Katherine Anderson (coxswain), Amanda Chikowski (8), Jillian O'Mara (7), Alison Cohen (6), Emily Gladstone (5), Gabriella Fleming-Shemer (4), Tatham Dilks (3), Nicole Pilling (2) and Sarah Riessen (1). The boat included at least one member from every class as it was composed of two freshmen, two sophomores, one junior and four seniors.
O'Mara became just the fourth student-athlete in Patriot League history to be a four-time varsity eight champion. She joined 2009 graduate Page Kannor and 2011 graduates Victoria Dudley and Carol Schoenecker.
O'Mara and fellow seniors Anderson, Cohen and Pilling are part of a 14-person senior class that contributed to four Patriot League titles during their time at Bucknell. It is the fourth consecutive Bison senior class to graduate with four Patriot League crowns.
The varsity eight was put in position to claim the deciding race because the varsity four won its event and the second varsity eight posted a runner-up finish.
The Patriot League Championship was held on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. It was the fourth time the event has been held there and Bucknell has claimed the team title each time.
