Bucknell Men's Tennis Travels to Annapolis for Patriot League Tournament Friday

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's tennis team will head to Annapolis, Md., for the Patriot League Tournament this Friday. The No. 4 Bison will take on No. 5 Colgate in the first quarterfinal of the day at 9 a.m. at the United States Naval Academy Tennis Courts. Bucknell heads into the tournament with a 9-13 overall and 2-3 conference record.
ABOUT THE BISON
- This is the second straight year the Bison enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed facing Colgate. Last year's match went in favor of Bucknell as it took down Colgate, 4-1.
- In the regular-season matchup between the two teams the Bison came out victorious, 4-3. Doubles partners Evan Zimmer and Josh Katten along with Gregg Cohenca and Aidan Lynch picked up wins for the team point over the Raiders. Zimmer, Katten and Gregory Maxson all earned singles point, which sealed the win for Bucknell.
- Bucknell duo Zimmer and Katten have gone undefeated in league action at No. 2 doubles during the regular season and are currently riding a 10-match winning streak.
- Senior captain Maxson brings a solid singles record into the tournament this year. He currently has an 11-5 record with nine of the victories coming in the No. 6 position for the Bison. Maxson ranks sixth on Bucknell's all-time singles victories with a 54-32 record.
- Captain Cohenca heads into the tournament fifth on Bucknell's all-time victories list with a record of 116-112. The senior needs just two more wins to move into the top three in Bison's history.
- Bucknell will head to the tournament after beating Bloomsburg 7-2 and winning three of its last five matches.
- Colgate leads the all-time series against Bucknell, 48-13.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT
- In 2011 Army climbed the tournament ladder and won its 10th overall tournament title beating out Lehigh, 4-2.
- Bucknell has won the Patriot League Tournament just once in 1991. The Bison have never won the tournament since it was altered in 1994 to a team format rather than individual flights.
- About No. 1 Navy: The Midshipmen enter the tournament with a 16-8 overall and 5-0 league record. The Mids beat conference opponents Colgate, Lafayette and Lehigh each 7-0 during the regular season and took down Bucknell and Army each by the score of 4-3. Navy has won the tournament eight times with the most recent being in 2010 over Army. The Midshipmen will have a first-round bye and will take on the winner of the Bucknell/Colgate matchup Saturday morning. If Bucknell and Navy meet in the semifinal match the Mids will come in leading the all-time series, 35-0.
- About No. 2 Lehigh: The Mountain Hawks head into the tournament as the No. 2 seed for the second consecutive year and have a 12-7 overall and 4-1 conference record. Lehigh earned the No. 2 seed by taking down league foes Bucknell and Army, 5-2, and earned wins over Lafayette, 4-3, and Colgate, 6-1. The Mountain Hawks' one loss in the Patriot League regular season was to Navy, 7-0.
- About No. 3 Army: The Black Knights return to the Patriot League Tournament as defending champions, going 14-12 and 4-2 in regular season and league play. Army gathered league wins over Lafayette and Holy Cross 7-0, Colgate 6-1, and Bucknell 5-2. The Black Knights have advanced to the championship match every year but one since the Patriot League changed to a team format in 1994.
- About No. 5 Colgate: The Raiders bring a 9-11 overall and 1-4 conference record into the tournament. Colgate earned its lone regular-season league victory over Lafayette, 6-1. When Bucknell and Lafayette met during the regular season the Bison defeated the Raiders by the score of 4-3. Zimmer and Katten won their doubles match over Luke Gensburg and Sean Spellberg and each Bison player earned a second win in singles play. Zimmer took the No. 2 flight over Bobby Berkowitz, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 and Katten grabbed a win over Spellberg at the No. 4 position, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2.
- About No. 6 Lafayette: The Leopards enter the postseason holding a 3-11 overall and 1-5 league record. Lafayette picked up its one regular-season conference victory over Holy Cross, 6-1. When Bucknell took on Lafayette earlier in the season the Bison pulled away with a 6-1 victory, sweeping the Leopards in doubles play. Lafayette will face No. 3 Army in the third quarterfinal in Friday's action.
- About No. 7 Holy Cross: The Crusaders round out the tournament seeding coming into their match with a 1-5 and 0-2 regular season and league record. Holy Cross will take on No. 2 seeded Lehigh in the second of Friday's quarterfinal matchups.
