OLEAN, N.Y. - Earlier this season the Bucknell women's lacrosse team rallied from nine goals down to beat Liberty. The Bison nearly pulled off another major comeback on Tuesday afternoon at St. Bonaventure but came up a bit short in a 15-13 loss to The Bonnies. Madison Hurwitz (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) scored three goals and two assists to lead the Bison, who rallied within two goals after trailing by as many as seven.
Freshman Arriana Sajjad (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) added three goals, while classmates Emily Kookogey (Lutherville, Md./Towson) and Claire Switala (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) scored twice each. For Switala, those were the first two goals of her career. Sophomores Lindsey Ferro (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) and Molly Ford (Cockeysville, Md./St. Paul's) handed out two assists apiece.
St. Bonaventure (3-5) got three goals each from Daisy Timlin and Elspeth McGarry along with two goals and an assist from Danielle Drabin and Jenna Barber.
Bucknell (3-11) scored first on a Hurwitz goal just 2:22 into the contest, but The Bonnies countered with a 9-1 run to take a commanding 9-2 lead with 12:59 left in the first half. The Bison made some headway late in the half, closing on a 3-1 run to get back within 10-5 at the break.
But goals by McGarry and Mackenzie Jordan to start the second half restored St. Bonaventure's seven-goal lead. Bucknell's deficit was 13-7 after a Timlin goal with 16:06 to play when the comeback attempt began in earnest.
Switala's goal off a feed from Ferro ignited a 4-0 Bison run that cut the deficit to 13-11. Sajjad followed the Switala goal with an unassisted marker, and then Ferro assisted on a Kookogey tally to make it 13-10 with 8:08 to play. Just over a minute later Katelyn Miller scored from a free position to bring the Bison within two.
Bucknell won the ensuing draw but turned the ball over, and that led to a goal from the 8-meter position by Jordan with 4:47 to go. After a timeout, Blair McDonald (Summit, N.J./Kent Place School) won an important draw for the Bison, and that led to a Sajjad goal that made it a 14-12 game with 3:27 left.
Drabin came up with the next draw, however, and just 27 seconds later Timlin found the back of the net to put The Bonnies back up by three at 15-12. After a couple of changes of possession, Sajjad completed her hat trick to make it a 15-13 game, but only 14 seconds remained.
Bucknell outshot St. Bonaventure 33-27, but The Bonnies scored on 15 of those 27 attempts, as a pair of Bison goalies combined for six saves. Sara Schlagenhauf made 11 saves for St. Bonaventure. Of the game's 28 goals, 10 came on free-position attempts, including six by The Bonnies.
Bucknell returns to action on Saturday at Binghamton at 4 p.m.
