LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman midfielder Arriana Sajjad (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) continued her scoring streak with five more goals on Saturday, but American had a bit too much firepower and pulled away for a 22-9 Patriot League victory over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Graham Field.
Kimberly Collins led the Eagles (6-4, 2-1 PL) with four goals and three assists, while Emily Burton scored four times. American broke open a one-goal game by scoring the final six goals of the first half.
Katelyn Miller (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) and Emily Kookogey (Lutherville, Md./Towson) scored two goals apiece and Molly Ford (Cockeysville, Md./St. Paul's) dished out four assists for Bison (3-8, 0-3 PL), who were coming off a thrilling come-from-behind overtime win over Liberty on Wednesday.
The two teams alternated the first seven goals of the game. Sajjad, Miller and Kookogey pulled Bucknell into a tie game three separate times in the first 13 minutes of the contest. Burton gave American a 4-3 lead at the 16:56 mark, and less than a minute later Collins converted a free-position shot to give the Eagles a multi-goal cushion for the first time.
Kookogey finished a nice feed from Ford to pull the Bison within 5-4, but the Eagles outscored Bucknell 6-0 over the final 13:23 of the half.
Emily Stankiewicz opened the second-half scoring to give American a 12-4 lead, but the Bison got back in it on consecutive goals by Sajjad just 1:13 apart. American posted the next two before Miller and Sajjad scored in succession to make it 14-8. But any hopes of another miraculous comeback - the Bison were down 9-0 in the win over Liberty on Tuesday - were dashed when the Eagles tore off five goals in a row to go up 19-8. And they kept right on going to the final buzzer. American pumped in three more goals in the final four minutes and tried for another with one second to go, but backup goalie Kristina Patrk (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) made her first career save as the horn sounded.
Sajjad had six goals and two assists in the win over Liberty, and she now has 11 goals and 13 points in her last two games. Sajjad has taken over the team scoring lead with 25 goals and 30 points.
American outshot Bucknell 36-24 and led 18-15 in draw controls. The Eagles committed only eight turnovers while forcing 18. Bucknell's starting goalie Caroline O'Neill (Bel Air, Md./Notre Dame Prep) finished with seven saves, while American's Kaska Komosinski had six saves.
The Bison are back in action next Saturday at Lafayette at 1 p.m.
