Bucknell Schedule at IC4A/ECAC Championships
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell track and field will make a final run at the indoor season, traveling to Boston, Mass., March 3-4 for the IC4A and ECAC Championships. A select number of Bison will compete for All-East honors at the two-day meet as the women make their stand at the Reggie Lewis Center and the men at Boston University.
“This is the largest group of men and women that we have taken to the IC4A/ECAC Championships in my 11 years at Bucknell,” said head coach Kevin Donner, who will lead more than three dozen Bison in Boston.
“We have a number of athletes who have an opportunity to make the finals and score some points, and there are a few others who qualified by the skin of their teeth who will get very good big meet experience,” Donner continued. “Competing at a meet of this level will really set up these athletes for a great outdoor season."
Both the men's and the women's squads fell outside the top 40 in the team standings last season, but the Bison collected a handful of All-East accolades. Robert Arent (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) was recognized due to his sixth-place finish in the 400 meters as was both the men's and women's distance medley relays for their seventh-place finishes.
SPRINTS/HURDLES
- Justin Hicks (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School) and Christian Lupica (Newtown, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) are scheduled to represent Bucknell in two events. Hicks will compete in both the 60 and 200 meters, which he won at the Patriot League Championships in February. With the two wins, the junior became the first to be named Patriot League Track Athlete of the Meet and the Rookie of the Meet, an honor he claimed in 2010. Hicks set the Bucknell record in the 60 (6.84) and tied the Patriot League record in the 200 (21.88) at the league meet.
- Lupica will try his hand at the 60-meter hurdles and the 200. The freshman was second in the 200 meters and third in the hurdles at the Patriot League Championships, recording some of the best times of his career. In his first season hurdling for the Orange and Blue, Lupica has finished third or better in four of his five meets. Kamal Riley (Hyde Park, Mass./Charlestown) will join Lupica and Hicks in the 200 meters at the IC4A meet.
- Jennifer Zymet (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) will be the lone representative for the women at the ECACs in the 200 meters. The sophomore placed third at the league meet with a personal-best time of 25.33. She has gotten faster with each meet, starting at 26.26 at the Gulden Invitational and getting her time down by nearly one second in her last outing.
- Arent became the Patriot League's first-ever three-time champion at 400 meters this year. When the Bison senior competed at the IC4As last year, he ran a career-best 47.83 seconds in the prelims, moving him into second all-time on the Bucknell record lists. He ultimately finished sixth in 48.24. Arent also competed in the 400 at the 2010 IC4A Championships but did not qualify for the finals.
- Making his first IC4A appearance is Jacob Eaton Hall (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira Free Academy) in the 500 meters. The junior was fifth in the event at the Patriot League Championships, giving him his fifth finish at fifth place or better this winter.
MID-DISTANCE/DISTANCE
- Bucknell has a trio of middle distance runners making the trip to Boston. Jordan Donaldson (Saxton, Pa./Tussey Mountain) will compete in the 800 meters, while Alex Jagelsky (Rutland, Mass./Wachusett) will go in the 1,000 and Dustin Horning (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) will race in the mile. Donaldson was second in the 800 at the Patriot League Championships, but the senior earned his IC4A-qualifying time at the Youngstown State Invitational with a career-best 1:53.21. Jagelsky has never placed worse than third in the 1,000 meters this winter. He was third at the league meet n 2:29.74. Horning was fifth in the mile at the Patriot League meet.
- Donaldson is the only one of that trio that has competed individually at an IC4A Championship meet. Both of his previous appearances came at 500 meters, however. Competing at the longer distance, Donaldson will look to maintain a streak that has placed him second or better at 800 meters in all but one career race.
- Horning has two All-East citations to his name, both as a member of the distance medley relay. He anchored the relay to a seventh-place finish in 2011 and an eight-place performance in 2010.
- Bucknell will send its two fastest 1,000-meter runners in school history to the line at the ECAC meet. Hana Casalnova (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) currently holds the school record (2:52.96), a distinction she took from Beth Braunegg (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) a week after her classmate set the record at 2:53.73.
- When Casalnova set the Bucknell record in the 1,000 meters at the Youngstown State Invite, it was the first and only time the sophomore had competed at that distance.
- Braunegg qualified for ECACs in the 1,000 last season but did not compete. She did lead off the seventh-place distance medley relay that also included Zymet, Erin Horleman (Beach Haven, N.J./Southern Regional) and Emily Liggett (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Lawrenceville School (N.J.)).
- Maddie Dulac (Baltimore, Md./McDonough School) will race in both the mile and the 3,000 this weekend. The freshman was fourth in the mile at the Patriot League Championships becoming the fourth Bison to run under five minutes at that distance along with Caroline Tolli (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport), Braunegg and Liggett. Her 4:57.26 ranks fourth in program history. Dulac was also sixth in the 3,000 at the league meet last month.
- Joining Dulac at the longer distances will be Tolli in the mile and Liggett in the 3,000. Tolli, who was named the Patriot League Women's Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year last week, was the league champion in the 1,000 meters and was fifth in mile.
- Dave Brown (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) will be making his first trip to the IC4As in the 5,000 meters. Before placing ninth in the event at the Patriot League Championships, Brown won the 5,000 at the Bison Opener with a career-best 14:36.62. The senior has one other appearance at the IC4A Championships. He was 17th in the 3,000 meters in 2010.
HEPTATHLON
- Weeks after resetting his Bucknell record in the heptathlon, Andrew Powell (Charlton, Mass./St. John's) will compete once more in the multi-event this weekend. The senior defended his Patriot League title in the heptathlon with a record 5,143 points. Contributing to that total were career-bests in the 60-meter hurdles (8.48) and the high jump (6-8 ¾).
- Powell has won both heptathlons in which he has competed this year, also breaking the 5,000-point mark for the victory at the Bison Open & Multi.
- Powell competed in the heptathlon at the 2011 IC4A Championships as well. He placed 10th with 4,893 points.
THROWS
- Bucknell claimed three of four throws titles at the Patriot League Championships and all three will make another stand this weekend. Tom Barr (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College HS) will continue to lead Quinten Marcott (Wayland, Mich./Wayland) and Stephen Koullias (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) in the shot put. He will also join fellow league champion Leonard Joseph (Whitesboro, N.Y./Clinton) in the weight throw. The women will be represented by shot put champion Sarah Bella (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham).
- Both Barr and Bella successfully defended their league shot put titles last month. Barr set the school record at 55-6 ¼ in the process. In eight meets this winter, the senior has six wins and one second-place finish in the shot put. Bella, who also threw a career best at 47-0 ¾, finished her career with four finishes at fourth or better at the Patriot League Championships.
- In 2010, Barr finished seventh in the shot put at the IC4A Championships with a throw of 49-3 ¾. Although he improved by nearly seven inches the following year, he placed 19th overall. Marcott was 27th in the shot put at the 2011 IC4As.
- Joseph won the weight throw for the second consecutive meet, and the fourth time this season, when he took gold at the Patriot League Championships. The junior threw a personal-best 63-0 in the process. Barr was second to his teammate at 62-8 ½.
- Abby Monaghan (La Plata, Md./La Plata), who was third at the Patriot League Championships, will join Bella in the women's weight throw this weekend.
JUMPS/POLE VAULT
- Bucknell will send four pole vaulters to this weekend's championship meets. On the men's side, the Bison will look to Daniel Markwalter (Vienna, Va./Thomas Jefferson S&T) and Nathaniel Witter (Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanan) on the men's side. Both cleared 15-9 at the Patriot League Championships, setting personal bests and qualifying for IC4As for the first time in their careers.
- The women will be represented in the pole vault by Emily Ando (Weston, Conn./Weston) and Autumn Schellenberger (Bethel, Ohio/Bethel Tate) at the ECAC Championships. The duo went 1-2 at the league meet. Both cleared 11-9 ¾, but Ando took the top spot in a jump-off. It was Ando's third win this season.
- Ray Holmes (Campbell, N.Y./Campbell-Savona Central) and Alex Prieto (Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro South) will compete in the triple jump at the IC4A Championships. The sophomore duo has an identical personal record of 47-0 ¾, which ranks seventh in program history. Holmes was fourth at the Patriot League meet, while Prieto was fifth.
