LEWISBURG, Pa. --The Bucknell women's golf team looks to build off a strong fall season when it starts the spring campaign Sunday at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic. The College of Charleston serves as host of the three-day, 54-hole event, which will feature a 33-team field playing both the Oak Point and Cougar Point courses at the famed Kiawah Resort. Live updates will be available at Golfstat.com.
This will be the fourth straight year Bucknell has competed in this event, which is annually one of the largest women's collegiate tournaments in the nation. The Bison also played the Oak Point course in October at the Palmetto Invitational, posting scores of 319-315-316.
Head coach Kevin Jamieson says that his team has played well recently, with a mild winter and the brand new Bucknell Instructional Golf Center contributing to a very productive offseason. Jamieson will send out Kasha Scott, Lauren Bernard, Brittany Rendell, Bridget Wilcox and Minjoo Lee, his primary top five from the fall season.
Scott led the Bison with a 77.0 scoring average in the fall, which was highlighted by a fourth-place finish in Bucknell's team victory at the Bucknell Invitational in September. Scott's even-par 70 in the final round was a career best. Bernard (78.0), Lee (78.7) and Wilcox (79.5) also posted averages in the 70s in the fall. Bernard and Scott led the way with two top-10 finishes apiece.
The Bison are looking to build toward the Big South Championship on Apr. 9-11, and this event should be a good measuring stick, as Big South cohorts Campbell, Charleston Southern, High Point, Presbyterian, Radford and Winthrop will all be in the field.
Bucknell will be one of the northernmost teams in attendance at Kiawah. Others in the field include Akron, Arkansas State, Augusta State, UALR, Chattanooga, The Citadel, College of Charleston, Daytona State, Elon, Georgetown, Illinois State, IUPUI, Jacksonville State, Longwood, Marshall, Mercer, Middle Tennessee State, Morehead State, Newberry, UNCG, Old Dominion, Oral Roberts, Richmond, St. John's, Western Carolina and William & Mary.
Teams will play 18 holes Sunday at either Oak Point or Cougar Point, and then switch courses for Monday's second round. On Tuesday, the top 19 teams will play Cougar Point, with the remaining teams finishing at Oak Point.
