LEWISBURG, Pa. - Competing in its final meet of the regular season, Bison track and field collected 14 victories at the Bucknell Winter Classic at Gerhard Fieldhouse on Saturday. Among the winners were Abby Monaghan and Leonard Joseph in the weight throw and Emily Ando in the pole vault, all of whom also set some of the best marks in program history.
"It was a pretty good tune-up and we accomplished most of our goals," said head coach Kevin Donner after the meet. "Physically we are ready for the Patriot League Championships next weekend and now we need to get the proper mindset. Being at home will be a lot of fun and there will definitely be a lot of electricity generated in this building next weekend."
Bucknell hosts the conference indoor track and field championships at Gerhard Fieldhouse next weekend. Action begins with the multi events at noon on Friday and resumes with the remainder of the events at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday.
Monaghan's win came with a mark of 53 feet, 2 ½ inches, moving her up one spot on the Bucknell top-10 list into sixth. She spearheaded a 1-2-3 Bison sweep in the event as Sarah Bella and Kathryn Wahls placed second and third, respectively, as well. On the men's side, Joseph finished with a mark of 60-11 ½. That kept him in fourth all-time at Bucknell but was an improvement of more than 10 inches on his previous career best.
Tom Barr was second in the weight throw and collected his fifth shot put victory of the season. A week after setting the school record in the shot, the senior threw 53-7 ¾ for his latest win. The Bison also took third through seventh in the event.
Ando upped her personal-best pole vault clearance by four inches and earned the win at 11-9 ¾, tying her for fifth all-time at Bucknell. Rebekka Vuojolainen and Autumn Schellenberger tied for second at 10-11 ¾. It was a career high for Vuojolainen, who now moves into a tie for the No. 8 spot on the program top-10 list.
The Bison men were equally dominant in the pole vault. Nathaniel Witter and Scott Weismiller tied for gold, both clearing 15-3.
On the track, Bucknell saw success at all distances. Taylor Funk ran a personal-best 8.87 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to move within .09 seconds of the school record. The senior was third in Saturday's race. Bucknell went 1-2-3 in the 200 meters, led by Jennifer Zymet in 25.60. Kim Nagotko clocked in at 25.80, while Sasha Hornock came in at 25.88 making them the only three competitors to finish in under 26 seconds.
The men gave notice in the 60 meters, led by Christian Lupica. After running a career-best 7.05 in the prelims, the freshman did one better to take second in the finals with a time of 6.99. It was the first time in his career that he had broken the 7.0-second barrier and moved him up to fourth all-time at Bucknell.
In the middle distances, the Bucknell women just missed out on a win at 800 meters but made up for it with team dominance. Caroline Tolli was second in 2:15.48. Less than five seconds later, six more Bison had crossed the finish line, giving them seven of the top nine spots in the race.
Kylie Pearse and Tyler Erhard gave Bucknell a pair of wins in the 1,000 meters. Pearse's victory came in 2:57.64 with Kady Weisner just behind her in second. Erhard won in 2:31.24 with Brian Charland in second and Andrew Kirna in third. Alex Jagelsky and Hana Casalnova also completed a sweep at 500 meters. It was Jagelsky's second win in two weeks but his first at that distance. The freshman was the 1,000 winner at the Youngstown State Invitational last weekend.
Among Bucknell's other wins in the final regular-season meet of the year was Robert Yamnicky in the 3,000 meters. Alexandra Romanelli also took gold in the triple jump, while Bella was the top placer in the shot put.
