
Bucknell's Powell Leads Heptathlon After Day One of Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. -Defending champion Andrew Powell finished day one of the heptathlon in the lead by more than 100 points, and Sarah Canfield posted a career best in the pentathlon for Bucknell as the Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships got underway at Gerhard Fieldhouse on Friday. Victoria Schmidt also scored a season-high 2,738 points in the pentathlon, but the Bison were unable to tally a team score on the first of three days of competition.
Schmidt put up some of her best point totals on the track after finishing the 60-meter hurdles in 9.71 seconds and the 800 meters in 2:36.62. By the end of the day, the sophomore had finished in ninth overall.
Canfield tallied 2,691 points in her second career pentathlon. The total put the sophomore 221 points over her previous career best. After the final event, Canfield had placed 10th overall.
Powell put himself in strong position to defend his Patriot League title in the heptathlon. The senior totaled 2,921 points after four events, giving him a 119-point lead with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters remaining tomorrow.
Powell put himself at the front of the pack early, with a 7.34 in the 60-meter dash. He drew closer to the lead with a mark of 22 feet, 3 ½ inches in the long jump, which was the best in the field on Friday. By the final event, the high jump, he had taken over the lead by clearing 6-8 ¾. The height tied his career best that ranks seventh in program history.
Also within reach of scoring position is freshman Sam Brandstadt in eighth with 2,587 points. Greg Barbier is currently in 11th with 2,356 points.
The championship meet continues tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.
