LEWISBURG, Pa. -Two school records fell and Bucknell track and field claimed more than a few gold medals on the final day of the Bison Open & Multi and the Penn State National Invitational on Saturday. Beth Braunegg took over the top spot in program history in the 1,000 meters with a time 2:53.73, while Andrew Powell became the first Bison to break 5,000 points in the heptathlon to lead their teams at the pair of unscored meets.
Powell finished the heptathlon at the Bison Open & Multi with 5,049 points, 76 more points than the previous school record holder, Ryan White. Powell led nearly the entire way. After four events yesterday, the senior had tallied 2,839 points to lead the field. His advantage extended on day two as he posted the top marks in the 60-meter hurdles and the pole vault.
Powell had company on the heptathlon record lists as Sam Brandstadt and Greg Barbier also joined him on the top 10 for the first time in their careers. Brandstadt finished sixth at the meet with 4,176 points, while Barbier was eighth with 4,071. The duo now ranks eighth and ninth, respectively in program history.
Bucknell's other record setter on Saturday was Braunegg in the invitational heat of the women's 1,000 at the Penn State National Invitational. The sophomore clocked in at 2:53.73, bettering Christa Sawko's previous record by .17 seconds and taking fourth in the race.
The 1,000 meters proved to be a successful distance for the Bison women all around. Caroline Tolli won the college heat at Penn State with a time of 2:54.30, which ranks her fourth in program annals. Betsy Edinger was third in the same race in 2:56.85. At the Bison Open & Multi, Kylie Pearse was a winner in the 1,000 in 2:59.39, making her the only racer to finish in under three minutes.
Top-10 marks continued to fall in other events as well, including the triple jump where Alexandra Romanelli was the victor at the Bison Open & Multi. The junior posted a mark of 37 feet, 6 ¾ inches for the win, ranking 10th all-time at Bucknell. Romanelli also tied for first in the long jump with teammate Alyssa Cardillo. Both Bison finished with a 17-10 ¾ mark.
On the men's side, Ray Holmes was second in the triple jump, while his 47-0 ¾ was a career best that ranks seventh at Bucknell. Patryk Najbar was fifth in the 60 meters at the Bison Open & Multi with his time of 7.06 seconds, which is tied for sixth in program history.
Back at University Park, Hana Casalnova took fourth in the 800 meters and Emily Liggett was third in the 3,000. Casalnova's time of 2:14.14 is the sixth-fastest at Bucknell. Liggett also took over sixth place on the program's record list with a time of 9:58.79.
Bucknell's other winners on Saturday, all at the Bison Open & Multi, included Katie Jessee in the mile (5:13.58), Kim Nagotko in the 400 (59.59) and Abby Monaghan in the weight throw (50-6 ¾). Leonard Joseph was also the victor in the weight throw (60-0 ¼).
"Overall it was a great weekend for Bison track and field," said head coach Kevin Donner. "We had a number of IC4A/ECAC qualifiers as well as a couple of school records. The athletes competed with a lot of enthusiasm and that energy will continue through the next three weeks."
Bucknell will host the Patriot League Championships in three weeks' time. Before the league meet, however, the Bison will compete at the Youngstown State Invitational (Feb. 3-4) and the Crusader Classic (Feb. 3) next weekend.
