LEWISBURG, Pa. - Competition is just underway at the Bison Open & Multi and the Penn State National Invitational, but already Bucknell track and field is making its presence felt at both meets. Tom Barr set two more program top-10 marks in the shot put and weight throw, while Leonard Joseph and the women's distance medley relay also inked new marks in the record books as well. Both meets will conclude tomorrow with action at Gerhard Fieldhouse set for a 9:30 a.m. start. Competition at Penn State's Ashenfelter track begins at 10 a.m.
Barr kicked off his day with a win in the shot put, giving him his fourth victory in four meets in the event. This time the senior recorded a mark of 53 feet, 10 ¼ inches. The finish keeps him in second all-time at Bucknell and moves him within less than three inches of the school record.
After his successful start in the shot put, Barr headed to University Park, Pa., where he placed third in the weight throw at the Penn State National Invite. There he broke the 60-foot mark for the first time in his career, ending with a mark of 63-9 ½. Joseph was eighth in the event at 60-1 ¼, putting him over 60 feet for the first time in his career as well. The two Bison swapped positions in the program top-10 list with Barr moving up to third and Joseph dropped to fourth.
Among those also competing at Penn State was the women's distance medley relay, which placed sixth in the invitational heat. The quartet's time of 11 minutes, 41.76 seconds ranks third in program annals and is the fastest for the Bison since 2006.
A different women's distance medley team took first at the Bison Open & Multi. The unit competing on its home track crossed the line in 12:21.16 and was one of just a handful of Bucknellians to claim a gold medal. Andrew Garcia-Garrison won the 5,000 meters in 15:41.80, and Jason Brown and Dan Mularz took first and second, respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles. Brown's win came in 8.58 seconds, giving him a season-best time.
Kim Nagotko recorded the top time in the women's 200-meter prelims. Her 25.97 was a career best and advances her to tomorrow's final along with teammate Emma Rice, who qualified in 26.69.
In the multi events, Victoria Schmidt finished fourth in the pentathlon with 2,730 points. The sophomore placed among the top five in all but one event in her first multi-event competition of the season. Andrew Powell got off to a good start in the heptathlon as well, having taken the top spots in the long jump (22-6 ¼) and high jump (6-6). The heptathlon will conclude tomorrow.
