LEWISBURG, Pa. - Kayla Yee (Centennial, Colo./Heritage) scored with 1:10 left in regulation to send the Bison women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at UMBC on Sunday, helping Ben Landis break the program record for coaching wins. Liz Dwornik (Endwell, N.Y./Union-Endicott) also scored for the Bison, who picked up their first victory of the season after three close 1-0 defeats.
After an evenly played first half did not produce a goal for either side, Dwornik broke the ice in the 52nd minute. On a 2-on-1 break, Chelsey Garkowski (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) played a pass that deflected off the defender and on to Dwornik, who cashed in her second career goal. Garkowski collected her first career point with the assist.
Bucknell seemed in control nursing that 1-0 into the 72nd minute, but a turnover left Rachel McKee all alone at the top of the 18, and she scored into an open net to even the contest at 1-1.
But the Bison got the goal back on a pretty combination just 70 seconds from time. Megan DeGennaro (Westlake Village, Calif./La Reina) sent in a cross from the left side that Jenna Tryon (Fairfax Station, Va./South County) redirected to Yee, who beat the keeper for her third career goal.
Bucknell outshot UMBC 9-6 in the second half and 16-14 overall, led by a team-high four shots from Yee. The Bison had five corner kicks to just one for UMBC.
The Bison split their goalkeepers in this one. Sandita McDermott (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Red Hook) played the opening 45 minutes and did not see a shot on frame. Colleen Garrehy (Danville, Calif./Carondelet) made five saves in the second half and was credited with the victory. Lauren Kadet finished with seven saves for the Retrievers (0-5).
After more than two seasons battling injuries, junior back Meghan Fitzpatrick (Verona, N.J./Verona) made her Bucknell debut and fared well while playing the full 90 minutes.
Just underway in his seventh season at Bucknell, Landis entered the game with 62 coaching wins. Sunday's victory pushed him past Chrissy Findlay for the program lead.
Bucknell returns to action at Binghamton on Wednesday at 7 p.m., in game four of a six-game road swing.
