ITHACA, N.Y. - Sophomore Chelsey Garkowski recorded her first career goal and junior goalkeeper Sandita McDermott made seven saves in her first shutout of the season, leading Bucknell's women's soccer team to a 1-0 blanking of Cornell on Saturday afternoon at Berman Field. The Bison have now won two straight games to improve to 2-3 on the season.
Cornell outshot Bucknell 19-4 in the game, but McDermott had one of her best games in a Bucknell uniform and the Bison defense kept the Big Red off the board. McDermott made five of her saves in the second half, and she also played big coming off her line to break up a number of crosses and corner kicks.
Bucknell's goal came in the 23rd minute after Megan DeGennaro sent a long throw-in from the left sideline over the defense and on to the foot of Liz Dwornik. Dwornik then crossed the ball into the box for Garkowski, who planted a shot into the side netting for her first goal.
It was the second straight game with points for both Dwornik and Garkowski. Dwornik scored a goal and Garkowski had an assist in a 2-1 win over UMBC last week.
Cornell (0-4) was led by Kerry Schubert with six shots. Kelly Murphy made one save for the Big Red.
The Bison are back in action on Wednesday at Mount St. Mary's.
