Bucknell Men's Tennis Goes 7-1 in Singles on Final Day of Bloomsburg Fall Classic

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - When Bucknell men's tennis wrapped up play at the Bloomsburg Fall Classic on Sunday, two Bison singles players and two doubles teams had gone a perfect 3-0. Octavio Canibe (Spring, Texas/The John Cooper School) stayed undefeated for the fall, while Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss School (Conn.)) extended his winning streak to five matches.
Canibe stayed perfect in singles action by defeating Donato Rizzolo of Mary Washington in straight sets. After going to super tiebreaks in each of his two matches yesterday, the Bison freshman dispatched Rizzolo 6-4, 7-5.
Maxson is now 5-1 on the year after his win over Mary Washington's Kaleb Nguyen 1-6, 6-4, (12-10). Maxson lost his opening match of the year, but has now claimed victories in each of his last five contests to move him into 17th in singles and 35th in combined wins all-time at Bucknell.
Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) as well as Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) also kept their winning streaks alive. Both pairings went 3-0 this weekend, which Cohenca and Zimmer staying undefeated in tournament play this fall. Katten and Morque are 5-1 on the year with their only loss coming to Cohenca and Zimmer in the final of the Bucknell Invitational on Sept. 18.
With the recent doubles success, Cohenca has now moved into the top 10 in the program record books. The senior is 50-38 in his career, tying him with Steve Bomberger for eighth. Katten is also tied for 17th with 38 career wins, and Zimmer and Morque broke onto the list and are tied for 24th with 31 victories apiece.
Also earning a doubles win was Canibe and Kyle Rosen (Armonk, N.Y./Bryam Hills). In other singles action, Morque, Cohenca, Zimmer, Rosen and Chris Tortora (South Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Prep)ended their weekend with victories as well. Tortora's win was particularly convincing as he downed Evan Carney 6-0, 6-0.
Bucknell will be back in action next weekend when it hosts the Bison Quad. Play at the Varsity Tennis Courts begins Sept. 30 and runs through Oct. 2.
